My M3 is one of the last and does NOT have the guard round the lens release button.

I have always considered it an advantage, easier operation with gloves etc. and in 40 + years have never got close to having a lens loose :)

You cant please all the people all the time!

I've seen the Bundeswehreigentum (olive green) M3 bodies without the finger guard. Maybe due to the Army using gloves (?) They probably dropped the guard with the last of the M3s along that time too (?) and could save a few pennies.

So I'm guessing that you'd have a hard time using the M6, too. It not only has the guard once again but the release button itself is much flatter making it even more difficult to inadvertently release the lens.

While I was up in the Arctic, my M4 returned from Solms after repair and service following my recent bicycle crash. During the 4 weeks it took from me sending it in until it returned (quick in my book) I bought a 50 Summicron and hood of the same vintage as the camera, 1970, so now the set is complete.

In addition to repairing the misaligned rangefinder Leica overhauled the shutter mechanism and verified that all times are spot on. It was a great camera before, but now it is really sublime to use.

Cheers

Philip

Im thining abou buying a M4

i have seen it and it seems in good working condition...

Shutter speeds good, rangefinder good...

Exterior is full of soul...i mean beaten up...i like it...

Only thing i doubt is the shutter curtain...i think its called that way...

It looks grey in oposition to the black of my M6...

I guess it must be the original...

it costs around 300 euro, the camera and its last cla was 4 years ago....

should i go for it?

I want a meterless camera :)

Ask if you could run a film through it at different speeds and have it developed.

The results should help answer your question.

Good luck and enjoy.

Thank you Azzo

do you think that the shutter curtain being grey is a sign that it is at the end of its time?

I would go for it. That's a good price, and 4 years ago is a relatively recent service in the life of a M4. If it isn't sold under guarantee, see if you can run a roll through it first, as Ivan said.

When you say the shutter is grey, do you mean that it looks faded or that it is actually grey? The shutters are/should be black but exactly how, well, black or dark they are can vary a bit. The new curtains in my M4 on the photo above are slightly darker than what it had before. But they don't really look grey.

I agree with the others though. It's definitely a good price (even if it turns out that the camera needs a service. Make sure you get a warranty or at least a return privilege should you be unhappy.

If it were me, I would ask for specifics about the CLA. I've noticed that some sellers advertise as their cameras having had a CLA but with no mention of who did it and to what extent. I seems some sellers might call a CLA a basic cleaning and not necessarily a full and complete service. Plus it can be important as to who did it and what's their reputation.

Also, take a look at the wax seal located at 12 o'clock on the lens mount. e.g., DAG (Don Goldberg) stamps a "92" in the seal.

Bicycle crashes. One crash smashed my new M9 which was overhauled by Leica USA before I was half-way through the pain-killers for the ribs it cracked upon impact. Awesome service.

Maybe we could start a ranking of Leica's Wrecked in Bicycle Crashes. :)
