In 1973, I bought a Leica M4 (SN M4-1213708) along with 2 extra lenses (1:2.8/28 & 1:1.28/135) and the  Leica METER MR. I really love that camera. I love backing off and getting informal portraits of my wife with the 135.

The past dozen years or so I kept toying with getting a digital, but 2 cameras was 1 too many for me and the more I learned about the performance of the digital camera, it seemed to me that the only reason for me to get a digital was the instant gratification. I still think the resolution of film surpasses the digital. If I want an instant picture now I simple use my smartphone. I has a 20 MP selfie and a 16 MP main on the back. Both with LED flash. Ok for snapshots, but that's about all. And since it is with me 24/7 and always on, it is handy.

Anyway, I haven't been too active with the camera for quite a few years now. I cannot find a good development lab. The local labs all closed down and only send the film to a national lab and they send back a CD. NO Negatives. I find that totally unacceptable.

So until I find a good lab to develop film and that gives me back the negatives. I'm without a camera. I have a very good scanner if I need digital copies. That's handy for sending copies to relatives and friends.

Anybody know of a good lab in Rockville, MD USA or close thereby. I'm not a heavy user, but I stopped using the camera since I am not willing to essentially discard the negatives.

So, I just add a M4 to my Leica gear.

Still not sure if I prefer the M4 or current workhorse M2

If you were me, which one suits your taste? And why? Thanks. 31be95cf1486ff2e0e409ab983df62c9.jpg60eac35e7ff50265729f3c58af522b10.jpg

Both great cameras. I can’t quibble over their differences. However, the M4 is my favorite, owning a chrome and an original BP. For me it was the camera of the day and used by several photographers I studied closely!

This is my M4, with 90mm fat Tele Elmarit. The M4 had to have the shutter repaired recently as the metal leading edge on one of the blinds became detached. I was informed by the repairer ( 40+ years experience at Leitz ) that this was a relatively common occurence after 50 years as they were just crimped on, but now it has been reattached with cement as well as crimping it is good for another 50 years!

I just bought (and will receive tomorrow) an M4 and a collapsible 50mm Summicron, plus the MR light meter (all three CLA'd for over 400 euros last February by Will van Manen) and bag for 985 euros, which I'm hoping is a good deal. The 50mm has some front lens damage that supposedly doesn't impact optical performance (and I wouldn't even mind if it did, a little bit). Now, of course, I need a 35mm or a 40mm. The 40mm Summicron gets good reviews, and is affordable enough. Can someone tell me how it performs on the M4? Do you use the 50mm frame lines? Anything I need to be aware of, as regards this combination?

It performs well on all Ms I had one for a bit used it on an m4p the only reason I sold it was i got the chance of a 35mm summicron. The 40mm will bring up the 50mm frame lines I filled mine so it would bring up the 35mm frame lines easy enough to do and a lot of them have already had this done the only other thing I changed was the focusing finger bit I changed mine to the curved one like the 35mm summicron, oh one last thing the filter thread is a funny pitch but you can easily get a normal 39mm filter on a couple of turns.

good luck

I bought the Voigtlander 40mm external viewfinder. The 40mm has a very wide focus range, even at f5.6, so you can it use only the ext viewfinder. Fun, and the lens is sooo small, whole form factor is tiny.
