Why is there no serial number?

It was edited out by owner due to personal reasons.

Reasons could include..

1. People stealing serial numbers to make fake ads (scamming)

2. People being mischievous and registering other people’s cameras as their own

3. People will probably be able to replicate top plates in the future and use other people’s serial numbers (a wild guess with the way technology is going).

When sending a Leica into service to replace a hot shoe /top plate with serial number engraved, they require the old part with the serial number before they can reissue a new part to prevent issues of having doubles circulating around.

IIRC Someone here had bought a digital M body with a replacement hot shoe w/o serial number and Leica refused to replace it with a new with it’s corresponding serial number engraved due to having no “core w/ serial number” even though the serial number of the camera could be found in the camera data itself.

Ciao a tutti!

Long time forum reader. I create account today because I cannot resist this question to you Mr JMF. How do you get such a green M3 with no serial number ? Looks so beautiful like we say in Italia mamma mia!

Can it still be bought today ? Please point me where on the internet.

Have lovely week

Mino

Hello Mino,

such original  top covers are getting rare.

Best is to have a spare top cover and base plate repainted :

I love black cameras, but for sure a M3 originally black painted is insanely expensive. Do you know this situation, you are looking through ebay or Instagram just to look at some Leica cameras, but you know that you do not need another camera, you will buy nothing, just looking around. BUT then I made the mistake looking at the beautiful repainted cameras from Enzo. He is in Chile and does wonderful repainting jobs. (Instagram : patagonean) And then I saw her, love at first sight, a beautiful black M3. Hypnotized I wrote him that I need this camera. A double-stroke from 1955. After one week I got the camera and it is such a beauty! He stripes off all the chrome and paints over the brass. It is like brand new, the viewfinder clear and bright. Can‘t wait to see the first results..

Not the nicest one, but finder and mechanics are great. Love this camera!

I have seen only with 1/4" screw.

Good thing as 1/4" to 3/8" female adapter is easy to find .

Sorry I never use one though.

My thinking is the bulk is not compact "M like".

Some users like the balance  and more grip with the lens carrier.

is the look through the finder of my 57er M3 DS.
After trying  modern style korrektionlenses which were sitting lose in the old eyepice now an old style diopter (with jagged edge) fits tight in finder.
Thanks to the great efforts of Leica Hamburg in finding a fitting one, I now have 'eyepeace'.
