I once had an M3 on loan, to test, for one of the managers where I work.  It was his father's and found at the back of a cupboard after his father passed away.  I only put one film through it (50mm Leica lens, can't remember the model).

I was very impressed and it led to me buying my M6 and subsequently M8.  I could happily buy my own M3, though will probably end up with an M4-2 or M4P.

...because it is a perfect tool - no less, but also no more...

((Aside: My M3 being the same age as myself, I am a bit envious of it's cosmetic condition))

Interesting you say that. I've been thinking I'd quite like an M3 born the same year as me - 1962.

I've started looking out for one in as good condition as I am - which is quite good I think  ;-)

Well, there's nothing wrong with a little coquetry on my side ;-) but then, the 50+ was kind of a watershed, albeit mostly in psychological respect...

I also loved 1954 D/S M3 and yes an enjoyable mature vintage camera with a 35mm Summaron 2.8 lens,

That is until light started too leak through the top hinge on the back of the camera which ruined some of my photos over a period of time, It took me a while to realise that It was'nt the shutter which I thought was the problem, so now I am the proud owner of M6 with F2 35mm Summicron and of course a built in light

Meter, now that's what I call progress, and by the way I'm on my 3rd red soft touch release button I wonder

How many M users can relate to that, last thought that crosses my mind every time I use my M6 is that

The M3 shutter sounded classier and a lot more mature to handle. That's Leica for .

Never thought I'd post a picture of a camera, but here is the M3 that I bought last December from an eBay store in Japan, for a $300 less than a camera of similar condition listed by Tamarin. The viewfinder is perfect: the yellowish tinge of the rangefinder patch against the blueish viewfinder field makes focusing fast and accurate, not to speak of the size of the rangefinder patch. The only defect is some scuffing the top plate, but I don't even see that without my reading glasses.

The Voigtländer 28/35 finder lives on the camera. No longer being produced, I bought it some years ago for US$85; there are still some new ones listed on CameraQuest for $600!

HELP NEEDED

I am a long term Leica person with M3, M4 and M10.  Also Hasselblad gear.

Am in central Asia (Pakistan) doing a photo essay and am offered a Leica M3 black in fair to good condition (functions fine, lots of brassing and a few dents) for 3500$US.  It was supposedly left here by a photojournalist in the 1960's.  The serial number is 10389XX.  Could anyone tell me if this serial number is in the correct range?

Web availability is horrible here or I would do a search.

Thank you in advance.

Frank

Frank - Thanks for the kind words. Any chance you could post a picture of your black M3, or do you want to wait until you get it back from Wetzlar?

I will post a pix when I get back in WiFi world in a couple of weeks.  I will probably drop it off in Wetzlar since I go back to the US through Frankfurt (Ramstein AFB) .  I will tell Leica to leave the cosmetics alone (ex maybe little dent removal) but to go all through the mechanics.  Interior looks great though viewfinder is cloudy.

Frank

Thanks again to all.
