I did not know that there were quite a few Swiss car manufacturers

I was looking to buy a big GT in 1981 and tried a 1971 Fissore bodied Monteverdi 375, also made in Basel. I am afraid it was pretty awful in nearly every way, other than very handsome appearance. It was amazing just how slow a 7.2L engined car could be and the handling was dreadful. The insurance was astronomical as well (as were both the Lamborghini Jarama and Espada I looked at). I ended up buying a 1972 Ferrari 365GT4 for £7,000, which was a really nice car, other than its propensity to rust and relatively cheap to insure through the Ferrari Owners Club on a limited mileage basis.

 

I sold it in 1989 to a friend of mine, who has a car body and trim shop and is able to keep just ahead of the dreaded Italian Tin Worm. He still has the car, looking much nicer than when I had it. He repainted it from the not very attractive metallic bronze to a beautiful metallic midnight blue. My kids still tease me, that I am the only person who ever had a brown Ferrari.

They were much lighter and less staid than they looked, with a lot of the bodywork in aluminium. Once they replaced the rather elderly IOE 3 litre straight 6 with as Bill says, the Buick derived 3.5 V8, they were very spritely indeed. Rover used to use them for long distance international rallying, both in the 3 and 3.5 versions. My great aunt had the preceding P4 Rover 75, then 90 then 110 in succession, the last of which she kept until she died in 1981. It had probably done all of 4,000 miles by that time. They were the traditional country solicitors and bank managers cars, without the slightly flash image of Jaguars. I have shut down my computers with all my car images, so again may I ask someone else to post the next one.

I had a 3.5 Coupe. Lovely car, leather, picnic tables and that Buick V8... married to crossplies and drum brakes all 'round... :rolleyes::D

Are you sure about the brakes? Even the later 3 litre P5's from '59 onwards had discs at the front but retained as you say, drums at the back. Remember those handsome "Rostyle" wheels on the P5B and coupé. I had a set of the same design of wheels on my Healey 3000 from a Jensen FF that had been gutted inside from an electrical fire.

I think it was in late 1961 or early 1962 my mother bought a small, light Oldsmobile suing the same engine block, though in the olds it was more powerful than the Buick version. That car won quite a few trafficlight GPs, and was what I was driving when I got my first traffic ticket. BTW: the car's handling was typical of US cars of the time, which is to say dreadful.

Wilson, the next time one of your offspring gives you a ribbing over your "brown" Ferrari, gently remind them that a guy named Steve McQueen ordered a new brown 1963 250 GT Lusso from Chinetti Motors and drove it until the late sixties. If that color was good enough for "The King Of Cool"... well, I think I have made my case. :) Link follows.

Indeed! What is wrong with brown? Like the aforementioned Ferrari 365GT4 in what I assume was: Marrone Metallizzato, I had the same -it was actually an M-B spec paint. Later, an Aston in Malvern Brown Metallic joined in and most recently an Audi in Teak Brown Metallic. Brown has always been "cool." ;)

The brown McQueen Lusso does indeed make for a very attractive car (imo). Here is one I did earlier,
