Not a restoration.  It was a total recreation.

It's quite an obscure model, so here's a more informative photo.

Datsun Cherry (1971-'77 in the UK).

Funny how the mind plays tricks; from your first crop I wouldn't have thought that the car was as small as the Cherry. Also despite my knowing the car - the shape of the c-pillar is instantly recognisable - I had never noticed that there was a concave profile to the top of the wing-bonnet line. Mind you; I was only 11 years old when the model appeared on the UK roads.

I remember them being particularly popular in the neighbourhood where I grew up. A case of a reliable car with decent specs available at a good price.

I had been thinking Fiat 128 Rally but realised the side repeaters were wrong...not sure I ever saw this Cherry in it's prime (maybe I just remembered the 240Zs) when my father used to take me to Sutton Park through the 70s.

I might be somewhere in the crowd here...(you could certainly get "close" to the action in those days (cough)) note the woman withdrawing a pushchair (stroller) at one point as the cars approach 😬

I was helped in part because there was a joint Nissan/Toyota dealership not 100 metres away from the house where I lived as a child. I particularly remember when the showroom put one of the new Toyota Crown Coupe models in the window. It looked a bit like a marriage (crash?) between a Mustang fastback and a Wurlitzer with its strange upper-wing-bonnet wraparound side-lights with slotted chrome trim detailing.

As far as the RAC Rally goes; Yes! I can't remember if it was The Beeb or STV which, back in the day, used to show highlights of the Rally. Scary Stuff! The mother pulling the pram out of the way was perhaps just trying to get a better view of (IMO) one of the most beautiful cars ever to be entered in a rally; the Alpine A110.
