stuny Posted August 30, 2022 Share #18329 Posted August 30, 2022 I thought all M-Bs of that era had white steering wheels. The screen wipers do remind me of my 220S
NigelG Posted August 30, 2022 Share #18330 Posted August 30, 2022 I would say that we are maybe looking at a rather more “pragmatic” vehicle than a lovely Pagoda suggested by the crop…(which could be had with a black wheel AFAIK as an option). The wipers, chrome intake surround and basic interior suggest a “lowly but maybe lovely” Audi F-103 and the spokeless large area of the steering wheel visible - which is more than half the diameter - looks very much like the “below-the mid-point-T-spoke” design (not sure of the technical term) of the F-103’s wheel. Honestly? I have no idea what the Mystery Car is but I'd just like to say I've always had a great liking for the 'Pagoda' SL model since I was a young-'un. Very Classy IMO. P. Rona!d Posted August 31, 2022 Share #18332 Posted August 31, 2022 Nigel, you are very close, nearly spot on. So you got it. This is the last passenger vehicle made by Auto Union (except the DKW Munga Jeep), an Auto Union F102 (not labeled DKW). 1964-1966. DKW´s new developed car with their first integral body was their last chance to survive. Unfortunately the "fresh oil automatic", a system which mixed gasoline and oil from the seperate oil tank, didn´t work well under cold winter night conditions which resulted in a bad mix of gasoline and the too viscous oil. Many engines died by piston seizures and galling. That cost DKW Auto Union A LOT of money and repuation. My comment about being close to a Pagoda was that under the Mercedes ownership of DKW/Auto Union the "out of fashion" 2-stroke F102 became a 4-stroke Audi F103 with a Mercedes engine. About 50.000 cars were made but only half of them sold as 2-stroke. So they put a 4-stroke Mercedes engine into it and sold the rest of the cars as "Audi F103" with some minor design changes on the front and back end. That was the beginning of modern Audis (Audi 60, Audi 75, Audi Super 90 etc.) Clients who wanted a more powerful F102 2-stroke could send the car to Bayreuther Motorengesellschaft. They replaced the 3-Cyl. 2-stroke 60 hp by a 6-cyl. 82 hp 2-stroke (known as "Müller-Andernach" engine). On paper only about 20 hp more but could be tuned up to 100 hp. Nigel, your turn! Rona!d Posted August 31, 2022 Share #18333 Posted August 31, 2022 The reason why it reminds people of a Pagoda W113 is, that the body design was based on the Mercedes Benz W119 prototype Nallinger ordered. DKW insisted on a 2-stroke engine (but a completely new development) and their own interior. If Mercedes had their own new 4-stroke engine installed, the car might have become a big sucess for Auto Union and they were never bought by Volkswagen.

Rona!d Posted August 31, 2022 Share #18335 Posted August 31, 2022 The F102 started as 2-door model but later they also offered a 4-door which came even closer to the MB W118/119 prototype.

NigelG Posted August 31, 2022 Share #18338 Posted August 31, 2022 Hektor Thanks for posting that lovely W118/119 shot Rona!d Without a full view of the front end I’m not sure I could have got to a F102. An interesting model and possibly more significant in that maybe it (and the development of the 103) made a putative “Audi” group essentially a going concern… I’m now en route via Salt Lake City to Jackson for a 2 week remote hiking trip in Yellowstone / Grand Tetons and have no pics on my phone to post via Delta’s in-flight WiFi and also no internet apparently for the first 5 days at least once I’m there. If someone has an image they can post - step in. I suspect that in Jackson I will see only Ford/Dodge trucks (all-black, matt paint, stupidly-oversized big wheels, called something so absolutely not gay like RAM, Bighorn, Ultra Power, Hemi, Raptor or maybe Avalanche set against the LA tech boys in their Subarus or Teslas. John Z. Goriup Posted September 1, 2022 Share #18339 Posted September 1, 2022 I just happen to have another one-off available to post....amazing what a new iMac can find that I thought was lost forever. The usual Information please - this car is quite obscure and not well known at all, therefore two cropped shots to help to identify this thing. Best of Luck JZG Welcome, dear visitor!
