lykaman Posted June 3, 2020 Share #13133 Posted June 3, 2020 Just talking about the Wolseley Hornet, one of our neighbors (mid 1040's) had a Hornet, he had stored it during WWll, I was just old enough to appreciate the beauty of this motor (it was immaculate).. He sold it some time around the mid 1950's.. L

It was facetiously said that Westwinds was added to the name as that is what an owner got, the first time he tried braking from high speed. 🤣 Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted June 3, 2020 Share #13136 Posted June 3, 2020 My best one was in a 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost in France on a trip to the Loire castles. I came into a small old fashioned village with cobbled streets. It was pouring with rain and the entry to the village was steeply downhill. I had changed down into second gear but downhill braking with rear brakes only (plus the transmission brake also acting on the rear wheels) in the rain, on slippery cobbles, provided little to no noticeable retardation on the high pressure beaded edge tyres. I sailed over the traffic lights on red in the centre of the village with back wheels locked and squealing, at a stately 15 MPH to the evident alarm of the few local onlookers. I came to a halt about 20 yards past the lights, as the road started to go uphill again, shaking like a leaf. Wilson
hektor Posted June 3, 2020 Share #13137 Posted June 3, 2020 None of the suggestions to date. The rear brakes should be the give-away. Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted June 3, 2020 Share #13138 Posted June 3, 2020 (edited) Hektor, The rear brakes are not in the crop and the rear wheel is wholly in shadow on my screen. A larger posted image size would also be a help for those using laptop screens. Since the update to the Forum hosting, we can now post images with up to 2048 pixels in the major axis.
