stuny Posted May 20, 2020 Share #13003  Posted May 20, 2020 Pippy's clue suggests to me two delightful little French cars I've only seen once each in the 1960s. The first is the Deutsch Bonnet, but a look at Google tells me the few that had bumpers had bumpers unlike Andreas' photo. The more likely car is the Matra DJet 5S, which I found stunning in the '60s in the US when most of our cars were big enough to fit the Matra in its boot. I'll go with the Matra - I'd like to have driven one. I'll bet Wilson has.
wlaidlaw Posted May 20, 2020 Share #13004  Posted May 20, 2020 I have only driven a broken Djet IV, belonging to a US Airforce officer in 1970, which I diagnosed as having a burnt exhaust valve and probably a damaged piston and bore. One of my companies were agents for Alpine Racing engines and it was hoped that the Gordini engine might be near identical to the 1100 Alpine engine but sadly that was not the case. I declined to get involved in repairing it as it had a unique Gordini DOHC 1litre engine, for which in 1970, there were no spare parts available in the UK and when I sent a telex to Alpine in Dieppe, their only suggestion was to sell the owner an Alpine unit which would be a direct bolt in fit to the Renault Estafette gearbox of the Djet. When I told the owner the price of the Alpine engine (£1500 plus labour to fit), unsurprisingly, he declined. We did sell him a new Lotus Europa in kit form, which I then built for him over a week-end for £200. Wilson
a.j.z Posted May 20, 2020 Share #13005  Posted May 20, 2020 (edited) Stuart is correct. Matra Bonnet Djet 5S. The unique thing about this Matra as far as I understood is that is was the first mid-engined sports car. Only about 1,500 have been built.  Welcome, dear visitor!
