wlaidlaw Posted May 21, 2019 Share #12281 Posted May 21, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) If only Renault had put the R8 Gordini engine in the Caravelle, it would have been a far better car. For a rear engine car (? with swing axles), its handling was not too bad. I took my driving test in my mother's one. Wilson

hektor Posted May 21, 2019 Share #12282 Posted May 21, 2019 Wilson, I learnt to drive in western Queensland in Volkswagens on dirt roads. That is how to learn to deal with a rear engine and swing axles. Jack Brabham told me he had the same experience. Most corners were taken sideways! NigelG Posted May 21, 2019 Share #12283 Posted May 21, 2019 There was apparently a Gordini upgraded “performance” version but that only increased the output from 37hp to 40hp......

Tyre smoking stuff. My mother had the 1100 version, which produced an even more exciting 55 BHP. It was also quite high geared and would do 75 MPH in 3rd, with only a modest amount of valve bounce. Listening to my mother, who was a truly dreadful driver, doing a hill start with many revs and lots of clutch slipping was a teeth clenching experience. They were made by a bus body and coachbuilders Chausson near Paris from a kit of mechanical parts supplied by Renault. Rona!d Posted May 21, 2019 Share #12285 Posted May 21, 2019 Thanks for the refreshing Caravelle (@dunk) and the stories behind (@wilson). There were some nice french convertibles around in those years. My beginners driving experience was classic VW Beetle Cabriolet, Peugeot 304 S & 504 Pinifarina Cabriolets. And some exotic vehicles like LR 109, DKW Munga, Willys MB Jeep, Borgward B2000, NSU TTS etc.
