Advertisement Posted May 20, 2019 Posted May 20, 2019 Hi dkCambridgeshire, Take a look here Name this car..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wlaidlaw Posted May 20, 2019 Share #12262 Ā Posted May 20, 2019 (edited) Dunk,Ā Correct a post war Jaguar Mk.IV. This one belongs to the owner of the Devshree Palace in Rajasthan, where we stayed and had been in his family from new. It is a 2½ litre model with a Standard Motor Co. short block, originally side valve butĀ with a Jaguar (possibly made byĀ Laystall) bronze cylinder head. The Standard Motor Co.Ā short blocks were quite well regarded and had OHV conversions done by various companies like Morgan as well as Jaguar. The owner was far from complimentary about thisĀ car, commenting on the awful gearbox, vague steering and close to non-existent brakes. He said he wished they had the far better Mk.5, like my father had and which he liked a great deal, in fact far more than he liked his successor Mk.VII. I said it maybe needed a trip back to the UK for restoration. He said that it would probably cost more than the value and he would have to fill out endless forms and leave a very substantial deposit to do a temporary export. This photograph is rather flattering of the car, whose paintwork is in quite poor condition. Scanned from Fomapan 200. I have cloned out/cropped offĀ some of the typical Indian rubbish and rusty oil drums in the background.Ā Your turn.Ā Wilson Ā Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted May 20, 2019 Share #12269  Posted May 20, 2019 My mother had the later coupé version of that car. She managed to blow the sump off by continual cold starts with much accelerator pumping until the oil was probably about 50% petrol. It eventually went bang. The dipstick was blown clean through the engine cover and the sump was shredded. She was lucky it did not go on fire. I remember it having a very vague and "twangy" gearshift. Wilson
