To crop or not to crop.....

OK, one more try, dont read it if you are bored with the subject.

Here is a photo I took recently. It is 10Mp of an 18Mp M9 image taken from across the road. It has been cropped, there was more road in the foreground, cars to the right and more pub to the left. I like this busy type of image, but I could have moved closer and captured a better version without the need for cropping. And that to me would have been more satisfying.

Of course I knew when I took the photo that I could cropaway the disturbing elements because I had 18Mp to play with.

No. Cardinal Pacelli was done with a different camera, but Gare St. Lazare was shot with a Leica. You can see the negative here:

Etherton Gallery | Celebrating the Negative:Photographs by John Loengard

Also, as I've mentioned already in this thread, an uncropped print can be found in the "Scrapbook".

Thanks for the precision.

I should have know better, for I do remember now having see Johm Loengard picture. Memory hole !

This is a request to picture editors. It says nothing about whether or not the print is from the entire area of the negative.

Hence too the true black border to show that print was truly from full negative.

but I could have moved closer and captured a better version without the need for cropping.

But, even if you shot full frame, look at how azzo cleaned up the verticals on the left edge of the full scene. Just this crop detail fixes the problem of making it appear that the guys leaning on the building are pushing it over. Better if you saw this and used better technique when you shot...but, no less valid for me to use the small crop after the fact to improve the image.

Give me a break, no need to demonstrate this novice stuff. If I had wanted to correct the verticals I would have done that before it was cropped, if I had wanted to make even smaller crops I would have also done that. There is no skill in it. As I said get a 60mp camera and make endless crops and pictures - be happy.

Jeff, there is a respectable photographic school that eschews cropping, to which you belong, there are equally respectable photographers that regard cropping as an essential tool. I see no harm in those two schools coexisting. Missionary zeal on both sides makes no sense. ;)

You missed the point...again.

My point was that it would have been ok to crop, after the fact, not that you should have done it. Remember the purpose of the thread...ok to crop or not?

Me too.

Are you certain it would have been better? Moving closer would change the perspective, not least the relationshop between the street furniture and the building and people. Taking the time to move closer would have put the pedestrians towards the right hand side of the image in less advantageous positions.

Yes moving closer would have changed the perspective and I think given it more depth, which I think would have given it a better look but I cant be certain. I would have liked to have done that and should probably have stayed around a while longer.

Jaap, I agree with your comments - photography is a broad church.

Jeff-S - we are just going around in circles.

The reason for my crops is not to demonstrate how this image should be cropped but for the simple fact that I see 2 images here ... left and right side.

Personally, I prefer less busy photos but that's my taste.

What IMHO would have made this image more interesting is that you should have waited a touch longer for the gentleman in the suit to come into the picture better positioned.

See the contrast between him and the rest.

I dare not ask to see the uncropped version ! :)

Well said, Azzo... i red just now this thread and, frankly, it looks a bit surreal to me... ok, I understand that there are people who, by principle, think that cropping is to avoid... but in my simplicistic mood I always thought that if a certain pic looks better to you when cropped... ok, crop it, period: if it is a crop of 1/2 or so of the image... well you probably had done better to use another lens (provided there was practical capability do do this). Don't understand why making an article of faith on this issue.

And... easy and fine-tuned cropping is intrinsic in digital photo processing... welcome to digital !!!

Why do you say that? Here it is in colour straight from Captureone.

Hmm - "John Snow" - could the pub actually be in Broad Street? A public health hero for those who don't know about Dr Snow and the handle of the Broad Street pump. Worth cropping out everything else!
