Has anyone been tempted to sell their M9?

There's a nice little thread going on about what equipment folks might have sold to fund their M9 purchase. So carrying this a step further, has anyone considered selling their M9 along with a bunch of glass to trade up to an S2? Sure, they're totally different animals but if someone has considered moving up to MF from 35mm, why not take this route? I'd be curious to hear if anyone has considered this and why.

Nice :D But the question should be ... to sell their M9s (in plural)?

One puny M9 would not bring a S2 even close

Yeah, you're right. There'd probably have to be a whole lot of glass to go with it. Perhaps a couple of Noctis?:D

Diifferent camera for a different purpose. If i had clients for an s2 I would have one or maybe a back for a contax 645. Leicas M's are for one kind of work and s2 medium format another. There is no all in one camera.

Yes, I've heard this a lot but after handling the S2 (I have an M9 on order) I am not sure what kind of M9 work you're referring to that might not be possible with the S2. The owner of the place where I checked out the S2 had just returned from a month-long trip to Europe and had some great travel pics to show, one of which he blew up to 24 x 17 that looked astonishing. Great detail. The M9 to me is the ideal travel cam but he said he had no issues lugging the S2 around and after I held it for a while, it actually did not feel as bulky as I expected. Still, I don't think I'll be trading up to an S2.

I got to play with an S2 last weekend for 2 days, magnificent, however be under no illusions it's a big camera to lug around. I'm very pleased with the M9 no reason to sell, the camera does what I expect it to do.

Not tempted to sell the M9 at all (in fact I've just ordered a second). But in the past six months I've bought three Hasselblads (Xpan, 500C/M, and SWC) for about what one of the M8s will cover when it is sold. MF film is nice. Negatives that you can see with the naked eye.

I've been thinking about it again today.

I've hardly touched my M9 and 3 lenses (sorry folks who are waiting - probably 500 frames) and it's not because I don't want to. It's down to a lack of opportunities and the unresolved issues around my unlawful, aggravated arrest.

I'm skint too, although I don't mind that. I really do want to keep it, but may part with it. I am very confused about it at the mo.

I just need to get out shooting without hassle from the old bill.

I actually sold my Silver M9 last week.

I had to get some money for a personal thing and it was the most expensive thing i owned, except for my apartment, and i cant sell that, so it went.

Funny enough i really do not miss it so much.

The fact that it for me as a amateur photographer was really expensive was a bit worrying for me. I sometimes decided not to bring the camera because i did not want to damage the camera, (silly i know) and sometimes it was a bit disturbing to bring it to certain environments.

Also the fact that i wanted a Black M9 but settled for a grey/silver kinda kept on bugging me a bit.

So I got me a really nice second hand Black M8.2 for a bargain. And i sold the M9 with minimal loss of money.

So for now it is a good solution. I will most certainly buy a M9 again when i get the funds for it. Hopefully at the end of summer. And one good thing i discovered. There are really nog huge dealbreaking differences (except one big of course!!) (for me anyways)between a M9 and a M8.2.

I like my M8.2, (but that is a different part of the forum) and like the M9 it takes beautiful pictures aswell! :)

So, let the bashing begin... ;)

(M8.2 and 50 Cron)

I would imagine recent adopters of M photography are highly more likely to sell a 9 than those that have been shooting with Ms for some time. I like this M, but I've liked the other Ms too. I doubt I'll ever get "attached" to any digital camera, though. An early M3 will always stay in the family, as will certain others. This 9 will be sold when I can't see the rangefinder patch well enough, but for now it's way better than I am.

Nope, for me M photography is about small and compact and light and quiet and split-image manual focus and no viewfinder blackout and f/2. Neither the S2 nor smaller SLRs compete. It is also my source of income, so selling it would be like eating my seed grain - a great way to starve later in the year.

Since the S2 has been public knowledge for a year longer than the M9, I can't imagine anyone with an IQ higher than a field mouse buying an M9 in the first place if something bigger was what they had in mind.

I can sympathize with those in a tight spot, though - I heard today on the news that the first pawn shop in 100 years has opened in London's financial district. The owner interviewed didn't mention Leica, but did say he had a whole case devoted to Cartier (baubles, not -Bresson!)

Guy Mancuso is a good example of what may be a group that felt MF digital backs met their clients' needs better than the M8, so moved on about two years ago, after a year of exploring the M8's capabilities. In Guy's case, he sold off a lot of M8 gear and lenses, and I haven't seen evidence of his returning to the M9. In his workshops, he uses and brings in for demos, mostly Phase One backs and cameras. He has posted a long review of the S2, but I suspect that was a loaner. Michael Reichman, who is his own biggest client, uses both M9 and PhaseOne P65+.
