MacSpikes Posted March 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I ordered a DMR in excellent condition with a spare battery as well. I'm pretty excited about this as you can imagine. I plan to use it with my R8 mainly for wildlife and macro shoots. I was wondering which SD cards I can use (with firmware v1.3) that are compatible. Is there a list available or can I use any type that will fit the M9 as well? Thanks for helping!
Advertisement Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Hi MacSpikes, Take a look here DMR: which SD cards? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
topoxforddoc Posted March 31, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 31, 2010 Best I've used have been the Transcend 150x 2GB SD cards. The Sandisk Extreme III and Ultra II SD 2GB cards have been fine too.
stuny Posted March 31, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 31, 2010 Mac - Congradulations. Just be certain to buy them fmo trustworthy sources -- there are conterfeits out there. I use SanDisc Ultra II 2GB. Don't be surprised if you have to send the camera and DMR to Leica to have the units set-up for one another. This seems to be the case with some R8s. Overgaard Posted March 31, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 31, 2010 Sandisk 2GB non-SDHC or Kingston. Those are the ones that has worked the longest for me. And congratulations. You will be like a kid on Christmas eve for some weeks or months with that kit.
MacSpikes Posted April 1, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 1, 2010 Thank you all very much for the replies. I ordered some Sandisk Ultra II 2GB cards today. I'm pretty excited coming from a Nikon D3 with Leica glass. I hope it's not a step back ;-) I will be using this setup mainly for wildlife and or macro photography. I use the M9 for all my other photography.
roguewave Posted April 1, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 1, 2010 I prefer the Transcend 150 4GB cards, if you can find them. 2GB is small with the DMR. I was able to by them in lots at 35$ a card. Look around, there is loose stock because Transcend stopped making them. Buy what you can. I once left 6 cards in my shorts and put them in the washing machine. They still work great. For me they are absolutely, rock solid , very fast & reliable.
Krauklis Posted April 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sandisk 2GB non-SDHC or Kingston. ... I just want to underline non-SDHC!! And make sure to build up a small supply of these cards, as they have become hard to find, at least here in Germany. (I prefer the 2GB type, in case of card trouble the loss isn't that big ...). -krauklis
JHAG Posted April 6, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 6, 2010 Today I ordered a DMR in excellent condition with a spare battery as well. Where ? I'm chasing one since almost a year and never found it, apart outrageously priced from some eBay vendors.

grduprey Posted April 7, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 7, 2010 Unless your R8 is a very late unit, you will need to send it in for syncing it to the DMR, this is done as a warranty update at no cost.

That is interesting since I own an R8. How can one tell if it needs syncing? Can you tell from the serial number?

Well... the R8 mated with my DMR was purchased in late 1997, no upgrade was necessary. I understand that some very early units may indeed require a firmware upgrade but I'm not sure the serial number will be of any help here since Leica has been known to use serial numbers by batches and not necessarily sequentially. Cheers, I once asked Milton Keynes what serial numbers of R8s were OK - they said you couldn't tell from the serial numbers - immediately compatible ones didn't all have numbers after a particular critical value. roguewave Posted April 14, 2010 Share #17 Posted April 14, 2010 How do you get the DMR to accept the 4G cards? I have been told that 2G is the max for the DMR. I shoot only raw. A 2GB card only allows 100 frames. If I'm in a feature rich environment, I don't want to exchange cards that often. The 4GB Transcend are super fast & very stable. The buffer in the DMR is very good, so you can just keep shooting. As I mentioned, they be harder to find as they aren't being made any longer. LVSBB6 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #18 Posted April 14, 2010 Does anyone know if it would accept 8GB 150x SD card?
topoxforddoc Posted April 14, 2010 Share #19 Posted April 14, 2010 Does anyone know if it would accept 8GB 150x SD card? No, it won't. The V1.3 firmware allowed 4GB cards (previously 2GB SD card max). No-one that I know of has used an 8GB card.
