germio Posted January 14, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted January 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Some say this lens is very close to the fabled 70-180/2.8 in image quality which would make it quite a steal at current used prices. Any thoughts?
Advertisement Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Hi germio, Take a look here 80-200/4 zoom?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

Any thoughts? Â An excellent lens, I no longer have it but I had no hestiation about using it at any aperture or focal length. Excellent flare resistance & color saturation, good bokeh, solid "Leica" construction, and the filter threads don't rotate A bargain among Leica lenses. jaapv Posted January 14, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted January 14, 2010 I agree. The design and fingerprint are closely related to the 105-280 and the 70-180. It is optimized at the short end of the zoom traject.
jc_braconi Posted January 14, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted January 14, 2010 I agree too, one of my favorite with R8/DMR.
cpclee Posted January 14, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted January 14, 2010 It's very compact / light weight compared to the 70-180. For a lot of people this is the only telephoto they'll need.
spydrxx Posted January 15, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted January 15, 2010 Definitely my favorite zoom. Portability is a chief concern for me (one reason I like primes), and coupled with the excellent rendition of this lens, makes it a winner in my book! farnz Posted January 16, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted January 16, 2010 I totally agree with the comments expressed so far. Â Can anyone tell me if this particular lens works well with the 2x APO extender please? Â Pete.
wakewood Posted January 16, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted January 16, 2010 Pete, yes it worked very well in terms of image quality, yet focusing appeared a bit difficult to me. On one hand it gets a bit dark and on the other it appeared as if the focusing throw was like half of the non-extended version making it a challenge to hit the spot. hamey Posted January 16, 2010 Share #12  Posted January 16, 2010 80-200mm Lens.  Love it.  As for Digital, tried it on the Canon 5D-II and it was great.  Ken. Welcome, dear visitor! Â Pete, hope you didn't get me wrong. i compared it with or without the apo-extender. I do not have the non-apo version for comparison. Â F8 was eventually the reason why I moved to the apo 2.8/180. wildlightphoto Posted July 10, 2011 Share #17 Â Posted July 10, 2011 What is this around the lens you are showing in your photo? Â It's the Leica STA-1 tripod collar, originally made for the 100 APO but with slight modification can be used on the 80-200mm f/4 (also fits the 180mm f/2.8 APO with no modification). The modification is to either remove the red bump from the lens or trim one of the ridges on the inside of the collar to clear the bump.

Posto 6 Posted July 10, 2011 Share #19 Â Posted July 10, 2011 It is an excellent lens. However, the main reason I have the 70-180mm, in spite of the larger size, is that I find it much easier to critically focus, and also the fact that the wide opening makes it more versatile as a replacement for primes in it's range. Also, of course, it's overall performance is somewhat better!
