Universalb50 Posted February 26, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can't afford very expensive Leica 24mm viewfinder, but have been using a Nikkor 24mm AiS MF lens on my truly spectacular M9. Does the viewfinder edges/border on the M9 correspond to the 24mm frame view?
Advertisement Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Hi Universalb50, Take a look here 24mm viewfinder. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
algrove Posted February 26, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2014 No, the edge is 28mm maximum, but with lenses giving 28 frame lines. Some users over time pretty much figure out where a 24 is larger than a 28. There are Zeiss OVF that are cheaper as well as others. Check out B&H website for info on that. IWC Doppel Posted February 26, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2014 I have this and use with 21 and 24mm Leica lenses and I prefer it to the later metal Leica viewfinders. Voigtlaender - 21/25mm Viewfinder I have the 18mm current Leica viewfinder and prefer the metal Voigltander 21/25 in terms of flare resistance, it is every bit as good in terms of clarity and to be honest seems more contrasty and vibrant IMO The Leica 21mm has lines for the M8 too so this will show 28mm lines on the M9. My 18mm Leica bright line viewfinder can also in theory be used for 24mm, I much prefer using the Voigtlander 21/25 for 24mm
peter_n Posted February 26, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 26, 2014 I've used both the old and new Leica 24mm VFs and the CV, but the best VF I've seen is the all-metal Panasonic DMW-VF1. It's accurate and very bright.
jaapv Posted February 26, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 26, 2014 The Zeiss viewer is brilliant - literally- but does not align very well.
MarkP Posted February 26, 2014 Share #6 Posted February 26, 2014 I agree with Jaap's comment about the misalignment of Zeiss finders on Lecia M cameras. I have 2.8/25 Zeiss lens for which I use the old 24mm OVF finder from my D-Lux 4. You may be able to but one for significant'y less than the 24mm Leica finder for M lenses. Luke_Miller Posted March 2, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 2, 2014 I got the "Frankenfinder" to use with my 24 Elmarit. Got one used for about half retail. That made it less expensive than what I paid for a new metal Leica 24mm finder. I added the Frankenfinder after a session shooting historical buildings. With the Leica 24mm finder the etched frame lines washed out at the top of the frame due to the bright sky and I occasionally clipped elements at the top of the frame as a result. The frame lines on the Frankenfinder are illuminated like those in the rangefinder and do not wash out. I use it with my 28 Summicron as well to eliminate the lens hood blockage in the rangefinder. I will probably add either an 18 or 21 Super-Elmar at some point and the Frankenfinder will work for them as well In my view the Frankenfinder is the best choice performance wise (frame lines visibility and parallax correction) and the most cost effective if you use multiple lenses in its 16-18-21-24-28 range, particularly if you can get a used one.

tobey bilek Posted February 6, 2016 Share #10 Posted February 6, 2016 21/24/28 finder should be embarrassed to have the Leica name. I can not see the 24 edges even without glasses. It needs to be set to 22.5 mm for it to be accurate at 75 feet. So you dodge your face around trying to see left and right edge and then the camera is moved. The locking foot is the best & only good feature. Quote MultiQuote Edit
Ivar B Posted February 11, 2016 Share #11 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) One could also consider the Leica 24mm viewfinder made for the D-Lux. Its outer appearance is identical to the much more expensive version (12 026) but it is made of plastic and not metal. I have both and I have compared the optical quality and it appears that they are absolutely equal in this respect. Welcome, dear visitor!
