SteveYork Posted May 10, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 10, 2012 From the graph, it looks like one of those brilliant lenses.
Fgcm Posted May 10, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted May 10, 2012 Why? They did a great job. In performance It should be close to S system lenses in the usual M size. If it Was not priced so hi, I would buy immeiately. Fgcm
bpalme Posted May 10, 2012 Share #6 Posted May 10, 2012 There is a three year waiting list and it is going for $10,000 on ebay. j/k but I can see it. The initial buyers will be the price gougers and collectors.
Aviator Posted May 10, 2012 Share #7 Posted May 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) On the existing bodies this lens is a little bit of "overkill". But for a coming 36+ megapixel M9 sucessor it is a perfect standard lens and going to fish in the realm of digital medium format.. Seen from this perspective this summicron and its exorbitant pricing makes sense.
IkarusJohn Posted May 10, 2012 Share #8 Posted May 10, 2012 Today, I'm even happier with my 0.95 Noctilux and my Summilux 50 ASPH.
01af Posted May 10, 2012 Share #9 Posted May 10, 2012 While I have no doubts that the optical performance of the Apo-Summicron-M 50 mm Asph is spectacular, there are two things to complain about before even having touched this new lens. The designer who got the front ring inscription wrong needs to be tared and feathered. Switching the base line of the the font ring inscription between the upper and lower parts of the inscription is a foolish and bad-looking idea that was left behind for good reason many decades ago. So why does Leica feel the need to return to this folly? The pitch of the focusing ring is way too steep again. What is the incredible performance good for when you cannot actually use it due to inaccurate focusing? I sincerely hope the product manager responsible for this lunacy is going to retire soon so we can come back to a useful (i. e. longer) focusing pitch.

TomB_tx Posted May 10, 2012 Share #11 Posted May 10, 2012 Actually this looks like a good strategy for Leica. The Summicron has always been a "bragging point" lens for Leica, held up by most reviewers as the best overall performance available. With other modern lenses getting so good, this new lens again drives a stake in the ground for Leica's optical excellence. However, the construction means it would not be a high-production lens, regardless of the price. So replacing the old 50 with this would continue Leica's supply problems and criticism. By continuing the old lens in higher production, and marketing this one as the ultimate optically, Leica can satisfy real users with the standard Summicron, and still claim to make the ultimate lens for those who insist on it. I'll never buy the APO, but it does show what Leica can do well.

bpalme Posted May 11, 2012 Share #13 Posted May 11, 2012 In the video they claim this lens combined with the Monochome M it will have medium format performance.
jaapv Posted May 11, 2012 Share #14 Posted May 11, 2012 And it does. It will not be low price though. 6000 Euro for a 50/2.0 is a lot of money. However, I have seen 100 cm prints from this lens on the M9 and I can only say, without looking at label, one would think they were taken with the S2... (and not just me, the large number of experts present felt the same way - unanimously.) For those that are as shocked as I was initially by the price, the “ classic” Summicron will remain in production as the midrange 50 mm between the Summarit and the Summilux. This lens is Peter Karbe’s Meisterstuck. He wanted to make the best lens that was possible -and he has succeeded. For those that can afford it - this lens is cheap for its performance...

But for a coming 36+ megapixel M9 sucessor it is a perfect standard lens and going to fish in the realm of digital medium format.. Seen from this perspective this summicron and its exorbitant pricing makes sense. It is not overkill. It turns the M9 into a medium format camera. Living proof of a recent discussion on this forum that it is not just the sensor, but the combination of lens and sensor that makes the final quality.
AlanG Posted May 11, 2012 Share #16 Posted May 11, 2012 Well I felt that Leica's biggest problem prior to this was they did not have enough good 50mm lenses in the line-up.
kokoshawnuff Posted May 11, 2012 Share #17 Posted May 11, 2012 I will continue to happily use my wonderful pre asph summicron. The rumored price of $3500ish was going to hurt, but I was ready with my credit card nonetheless; then...reality struck.
40mm f/2 Posted May 11, 2012 Share #18 Posted May 11, 2012 Many lenses work very fine in the center but at the edges they show limitations even with the M9. Looking at Leica's data sheet that Summicron will show the limitations of that sensor even at the edges. Will the M10 meet that standard? Maybe but then also in price (3X)

I figured there had to be more to it. You have been helpful in this regard before. Please explain how 18MP is medium format.. Supposedly this lens combined with the M Monochrome has much higher resolution. The B&W sensor and this new lens. I'm no expert though just repeating some things from Leica.
