farnz Posted October 2, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 2, 2009 Maurizio, Superb shots and beautifully processed! One thing you might like to be aware of was that I had problems in looking at your NY Tale gallery. It loaded very slowly at first, hung, and then I got an Adobe Flash 10 warning telling me that some of the Flash script was causing Flash to run slowly and did I want to quit? I did and re-entered and although it loaded gradually it did run but in manual made the transitions between pictures went fast and slow in patches and the content of two of your photos was blocked out in grey. I didn't have any problem with your An American Tale gallery but Coloured Places took an age to load (and I'm talking initially rendering the grey frame around the first photo in 2 or 3 installments of 2 seconds) but then ran pretty well in manual. For info I'm browsing with Safari for Windows version "4.0.3 (531.9.1)" and I updated Adobe Flash to the latest version yesterday. But, as I said, the photos are superb (I think my favourite was the 3 cowboys in the bar) and it was worth the faffing about. Pete.
Overgaard Posted October 2, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 2, 2009 I envy the look of your files a bit. They glow of light, contrast and life. Could you tell a bit about your workflow for color and black and white; what you generally use of tools in Photoshop to achieve "your look."
daveleo Posted October 2, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 2, 2009 Maurizio wonderful work! but I also had trouble with your New York page .... very slow playing, most images sputtered and seemed to get slower as it played through. i have Flash 10.0 r32 running through Firefox on ubuntu. your images are beautiful. Mauribix Posted October 2, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 2, 2009 Thank you all guys, much appreciated! Thank you Pete and Dave for spending time and describing your issues, I'll try to figure that out. Pete, did you have the same problems with my website using Explorer or Firefox? I'm curios. Thorsten I'm glad to tell you about my workflow. I use exclusively Lightroom, sometimes Capture One comes in hand when it's up to B/W, since I've bought some B/W profiles in the past, they're the JFI's profiles JFI Color Labs Actually when it's up to color, I created a couple of presets in Lightroom, well, I tend to desaturate some colors (Green -100 and Acquamarine -65), I increase luminance for Green, Yellow and Orange (all the three +60 more or less), finally I tweak Hue for each colour depending on the scene and the effect I like to have). Then, I use a strong contrast curve, in the contrast graph (i use the Lightroom's preset "strong"), at the ens I tend to put some Fill-in Light and increase Blacks in the exposure's settings. Sharpening set at your pleasure and need, anyway I disable any kind of noise reduction. I found that when using noise reduction my settings are less "effective" and sometimes you get strange artifacts with colors, especially with Hi-ISO shots. I hope this helps! If not, I hope to meet you in Berlin and show you that! Let me know if it works for you Thorsten, and for you all guys! ciao Maurizio
farnz Posted October 2, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 2, 2009 Maurizio, Since you've asked, in Firefox 3.0 New York Tale runs fine but in IE7 it's quite slow, say, 2+ seconds transitions between slides compared to immediate with Firefox. Pete.
rsolomon Posted October 2, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 2, 2009 Maurizio, Love your NY tale. slide 49, Pauls burger place -- i ate there about 2 weeks ago, the burgers are good but not the best
turner Posted October 3, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 3, 2009 A nice way to while away a bit ot time; going over your captures. Wonderful!
skimmel Posted October 3, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 3, 2009 Wonderful! There are so many that I like that I can't list them all, but.... Several of your wider shots are very moving (e.g., 8, 16 in An American Tale, and 17 in 25 coloured places). May I ask which lens you used for these? (and was it on a crop factor body?). I also really like 9 in An American Tale.
Mauribix Posted October 6, 2009 Author Share #17 Posted October 6, 2009 Thank you all guys once again! Skimmel, n.8 in "an american tale" is made with M8 and CV12, I had the luck of some light reflecting from a window behind me, and I got almost an HDR effect, while indeed it's not. Number 8 and 16 from the same series are made with 35lux ASPH. Number 17 from coloured places is made with the Zeiss 18mm, while n.25 is made with the CV12. @rsolomon... indeed you're right, good but not the best. I remember two better places in S.F. the Gordon Biersh (the Marzen Burger was fantastic!), and Barney's (almost every burger there was amazing!) Turner and Pete, thanks for your feedback!Much appreciated. Sorry for my late answers! ciao

wda Posted October 6, 2009 Share #19 Posted October 6, 2009 Maurizio, you have presented some fascinating subjects, well observed and captured. I looked at one stream which included Route 66 which was really interesting. On the technical side I seem to be at variance with many other members. Several of your pictures in that series were extremely dark with undiscernable subjects. Others showed well although the colours had an old-fashioned hint about them, possibly of Ansco? (Not sure of the spelling). My PC is running Windows XP on a calibrated Eizo monitor using Firefox Version 3.0.7. Perhaps I am not picking up your embedded colour profile? Just a thought and not a criticism. I certainly haven't experienced this phenomenon before.

Maurizio I have viewed the site on Safari Mac (pantone calibrated) also Vista (Dell defaults) IE Safari and Firefox and the colour is consistent across all three browsers and the two OS with IE very slightly lighter. There are saturated and less saturated images but I assume this was a conscious decision and very effective. Congratulations on beautiful folio of images.
