Leica should rebate M8/8.2 owners for an M9

Not that I like a lot to play Leica's defender... but we are speaking of a Company that has to live on its products, selling them :

....deceives you about the possibility of a full frame M camera possibility "in the near future", and then releases one without almost any warning...

Leica time ago declared, officialy, they were working on a FF M, and that there were various issues to solve: what else they could say ? "We hope to bring out a FF M around September 09" ? What about M sales ? They have not 4 or 5 product lines alive, so being able to afford the lowering of sales on one sustaining the other product lines. And what if the pre-prospected date wouldn't have been met ?

...and it's now obvious that Leica don't care about me or my camera as a previous customer (of 25 years M & R film) now they only care about the future customers - until the next model is released.

I think Leica is perfectly able to take care of your M8.2, now and for a decent number of years (how many, that's undoubtly an issue, but so is for M9... it's only 3 years younger, after all)

It's not necessarily about the money, but the lack of truth and integrity of the current Leica management that doesn't mind treating it's previous customers with contempt.

Frankly, seems to me an exaggeration to accuse them of lack of integrity... Mr. Lee made a unwise outing with his declaration of the "perpetual upgrade" strategy on M8, and left the Company soon after...

No - but they are still a company and as such cannot afford to tell customers: "Please go away, I won't sell you my product because we are going to announce a new model in half a year"

If you had a good relationship with your dealer, and if he followed the market, he might have told you two and a half months ago to wait a bit. My dealer told me. It is just that I already knew ;)

if you knew that then why didn't you tell us?

I dont see the problem at all. If I was buying & given the choice between a M8 (at 4000 euro what I paid) and a M9 I would probably buy the M8 again (not the M8.2).

Sure the M9 is probably better but not 1500euro worth better, at least not in most situations. Who knows I may buy a M9 at some point but not because the M8 is no good.

I have been very impressed with the firmware updates that became available and the free update to C1-4 was another unexpected bonus. If I sell now (which I have no inclination to do) I would lose about 1000 euro/year, if I trade in probably less. That is pretty good going.

That Peter bought his M8.2 just a few months before the M9 is a source of regret. But that hardly anyone can buy an M9 right now can be seen as part of the same problem. If you notice in the "assembling the M9" video made in the middle of last month, Leica was still making M8.2s and I suppose expecting to sell them to people who didn't yet know about the M9. Most other companies would probably have ceased production of the older product in order to ramp-up production of the new one so that they would have a more substantial stock available for sale following its announcement. I suppose they wanted to use all the M8 parts they had stockpiled instead of saving them for spares. I really was surprised that they were still pumping M8s down the pipeline only a couple of weeks before the official announcement.

Pity they carried on using up the stock of the horrible rubber covering from the M8-1 on the grey M9.

I see nothing wrong with carrying on selling M8-2's right now. The going price for a new one on eBay seems to be about £2500/$4000. I was printing some photos I had taken in the USA last month from the 19th floor of the Silo Tower of Baltimore night-time waterfront with M8+ 35 ASPH Lux. I printed these to A3+ and on looking at them, I did wonder why I am getting an M9. The M8 is still a great camera.

Is it just me or has the forum turned into a very cynical place since the M9 was announced? Every time I come on here people are moaning and arguing!

Yeah, righto - so I put a deposit down on an M8.2 back in July, joined this forum to get some advice, which was great, and gathered that an M9 might be coming. So I held off on the purchase, lo and behold the M9 is announced, the dealer agrees to shift my deposit to an M9, and gives me one of the first two arriving in the shop.

So that way, my original M8.2 purchase isn't devalued before it even reaches me, I get a nice camera and a good introduction to Leica M, and I feel like I've got a good deal.

To the gentleman disappointed with Leica, the glass is half empty, or half full, or in his case, "Who drank my water?"

Sorry I didn't see you in my home town. Hope you got some nice shots from the Shot Tower (no pun...actual name). I have some nice bw prints from recent wanderings around the Inner Harbor and Little Italy sections nearby.

To those who think their glass is half empty I should remind you that this is not possible. The word 'empty' is an absolute. If a glass contains even one drop it is part full. Empty is empty. There is no such thing as half empty.

My point? Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. :)
