Digilux 2 - why it took me so long??

Congratulations on your Digilux 2.

There is something truly remarkable with this sensor / lens combination that produces stunning results.

Love the ability to use the bounce flash if needed.

Converted images (to B&W) with any of the top plugins give you a look that takes you back to the darkroom days.

Looking at all the pictures taken with the D2, I wonder why Leica did not update the D2 with a newer sensor and image processing engine.

A D4 with say a D2 body and a DL4 sensor and new image processor will appeal to a wider audience than the X1 IMHO.

I couldn't agree more!! And because the DL4 sensor is much smaller that the one present on the D2, the zoom range could be bigger! Can you imagine it having a 24mm-90mm f/2 - f/2.8 lens?

Wow!! It would be a winner for sure!

They didn't because it would have challenged sales of the M9! The X1 (as nice as it probably is) doesn't. An X1 with a similar lens to the D2 would have been a threat too. Though it might come out later when M9 sales have peaked.

I've just bought a pristine (new sensor) D2 as an 'upgrade' to my M8! I wish I'd got one back in '04 when i was giving it thought. It would have helped my work sooo much! It's an absolute classic, and just about now the collectors are starting to luck for them to put in their cabinets! Go buy one quick!!!

I can't see how this is true... you either want an M or you don't. If you cannot afford an M, and want a Leica, you'll make do with an X1 or Digilux. I cannot see many who'd prefer a digilux over an M if the prices were comparable. None of these cameras are going to make someone who wants an M9 think twice. It's only people, like myself, who will not spend $7000 on a body, that look for alternatives in the cheaper form. Maybe I'm strange, but I'd take an X1 over a Digilux (even an updated version) any day...

I think what people want is a camera they are pleased with; something that works for them. If Leica produced a high quality digital camera with a shutter as quiet and vibration free as a Digilux 2, with a similar very high quality and fast mid-zoom Summicron on it, then with maybe the X1 sensor and a large optical viewfinder...

What we're designing here is possibly the perfect camera for many, and one that could certainly be atractive to be used professionally. I can't see Leica making such a camera when they're trying to maintain their classic M range with all the lens revenue to come also. Not everyone is 'making do' with an X1, many will be buying it in preference to an M. I was seriously considering it and I've got three Ms.

Could you elaborate on that? I am curently looking at it from the other side. At the moment I have two Digilux 2. It is an amazing camera, and I will always keep at least one. But still a real rangefinder seems to have advantages for me too. The M8 with a cheap lens or a M6 with 2 lenses is just inside my budget.

The biggest advantage of a D2 over an M is the fact it has a high quality zoom, so it eliminates the need for changing lenses. Are there other reasons to choose a D2 over an M8?

I'm very interested in the X1; even more so than the M9. I haven't seen or tried an X1 yet, but I've been told by someone who has that the shutter is very quiet. What this means I'm not sure, but if it's as quiet as a Digilux 2 then it could be an asset for certain types of work where an M camera (certainly the original M8) might not be allowed. Shooting during television recordings etc. or even photographing during certain church services which I've also done. It is smaller than an M9, so this is useful too. Of course it depends what is done with resulting work. but the X1 would certainly be useable as a professional camera for documentary photography, as is the Digilux 2 if used carefully. The quiet shutter is the Digilux 2's asset, and for me I like the 100% viewfinder; even if it is electronic!

I hope you find your nice M6 or 8. If you do go for the M8, try to get one with an updated shutter otherwise it will sound very loud after your Digilux 2. I think the updated framelines are essential too. Good luck!

Hello friends of the Digilux 2, I am normally not so much nostalgic, however, the D2 raises such feeling in my heart, and I love the D2 very much although it is more than five years old and technically out-dated for sure.

Why?

Well, it has a perfect design, can be operated very easily, has a fabulous lens and a silent shutter, and, although I perfom a slight final fine-tuning in Photoshop, you can use the jpg files almost out-of-the-box.

So, if Leica would create a new Digilux 2.1 with a larger and faster sensor and an improved electronics including a G1-like EVF, simultaneously keeping all other positive properties of the D2, that would really be a burner!

To speculate a little bit, if a hypothetical D2.1 would carry a 4/3 or even an APS sensor, a new 28-90 mm lens should be calculated, and it would not be as small if it would provide f2. Well, I could live with a larger lens on a D2.1, or with f2.8, and I would pay more than I paid for the D2, naturally.

Maybe Leica does not so because they are afraid that such a camera would "cannibalise" the M9. The X1 is a completely different story, not made for those who love the D2 for its specific properties.

Yes, the ELPRO is quite expensive. Does anybody know its enlargement factor?

I have a close-up lens from B+W, and it does its job well in most cases. The following image was taken with my Digilux 2 and this close-up lens, and the image was cropped a bit.

That's one great portrait of a grasshopper with character.
