cstevens Posted August 12, 2009 Author Share #21 Posted August 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) do most of you use the enormous hood? I am thinking of getting a 72mm step up ring and normal lens cap. Thought this might make a less conspicpous street camera without the hood
Advertisement Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Hi cstevens, Take a look here Its Official, I have the bug - New Digilux 2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted August 12, 2009 Share #22 Posted August 12, 2009 New D2's were shipped with a 69 mm cap that pushes over the end of the lens so I don't use the hood for the same reason as you describe. As far as I recall from a thread many moons ago, a replacement Leica cap is fairly expensive (assuming that they're still available) but the LC-1 hood fits just as well, is much less expensive and according to the Panasonic Spares Shop is still listed at £4.04 as the "VYKIC96 Lens Cap Unit" at the bottom of the page. Pete.
cstevens Posted August 12, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted August 12, 2009 ooo, you star thats a much cheaper and tidyer option Thanks.
elgenper Posted August 12, 2009 Share #24 Posted August 12, 2009 Well, you surprise me... Except for when using a closeup lens (and the recent trip to Solms to get a new sensor), the original lens hood hasn´t been off my D2 since the day I bought it almost 5 years ago... It gives an excellent mechanical protection without any filter, the camera can be put away without a lens cap and be istantly ready for shooting - and I presume that hood also does prevent some glare and reflexions... Enormous? Compared to the black salad bowls that adorn all Canon or Nikon zooms nowadays, this one is TINY....
cstevens Posted August 12, 2009 Author Share #25 Posted August 12, 2009 Um, yes, I guess compared to the bath that attaches to my Nikon 70-200 ED VR lens, then yes I guess the Leica one is tiny I just thought that possibly for a street shooter, its a little more descreet without the hood, but I didnt thing of utilising the hood as a cap as it is deep enough to protect the lens taking in and out of a bag without puting the cap back on. SO many configurations and ideas
martinvath Posted August 14, 2009 Share #26 Posted August 14, 2009 The case is listed in the original brochure which You can find on Thorstens site: http://www.overgaard.dk/pdf/digilux_2.pdf Regarding low light with D2 i I´ve experimented with raw iso 400 underexposed 1 stop (EI800 iso), then autoprocessed in Lightroom + a little extra contrast. No Noise reduction. I think it looks quite like my scanned film, picture 2. Welcome, dear visitor! Cirrus1 Posted August 14, 2009 Share #27 Posted August 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Slightly OT: I have a question to all, having 2 Digilux 2's and a D-lux 4, I still have about $1500 left over from selling my Canon kit. Any suggestion? I don't think an M8's in my future in terms of cost. I was debating a Digilux 3 but I am wondering if Leica may release a version of the rumored Panny GF1. Thoughts??? Buy more D2's : ) !!! Regards, John P.S. Hope this is not considered highjacking the thread
carlosecpf Posted September 5, 2009 Share #28 Posted September 5, 2009 Hi Cirrus, It might be to early for me to recommend something because I bought a D3 1 month ago and I D2 today, so haven't played enough with it yet. But D3 has wowed me big time. I only shoot JPEG but the results speak for themselves IMHO. Look at this set on my flickr page: Vacations - a set on Flickr No retouching, but the added vignette in some pictures. I will test the D2 over the weekend. John Thawley Posted September 5, 2009 Share #29 Posted September 5, 2009 I'm curious to see where this X1 rumoured camera goes. It looks interesting from the leaked photos... but I'm curious about size, viewfinder and other such details. Other than that... I'd buy Digilux 2(s) over and over. I want to hoard them. It is the most soothing, peaceful digital camera on earth. It is simply "photography" as it should be. JT
rjans Posted September 5, 2009 Share #30 Posted September 5, 2009 Congrats with your Digilux 2! I got mine last year, also with the leather case. Replaced the original strap of the camera with a Luigi one. The lens is absolutely great. I started using the D2 in RAW but during my trip in Spain early this summer I shot everything in Jpeg; I wish I had taken indoor shots in RAW; it is easier to correct white balance. dpitt Posted September 5, 2009 Share #32 Posted September 5, 2009 Just to confirm what others said. I have the bug too! After looking for something to better the results I get from my trusted Nikon D70, I turned to Leica. My first thought was that a used M8 with the cheapest lens possible would be needed to really satisfy the perfectionist in me. I found that this would cost me at least 2500 Euro. Which is more than I can justify for this hobby, so I kept looking for a cheaper alternative.... Then I came accross Thorsten's website beginning of July. And soon after started looking for a Digilux 2. Got mine on Aug 20 for 450 Euro, Leica UV filter, hood and cap included. It is in mint condition, except from a few scratches and wear on the diafragm ring. 24 hours later I was leaving for a holiday in France, so I did not have a chance to do more than a test shot or two before packing it. Not knowing the limits of the D2, the D70 went with me all the time on this trip. I expected to need the D70 in long tele and low light. Surprisingly, during these 9 days I shot about a 1000 shots (including bursts and manual bracketing shots) with the D2 and only 10 with the D70! This produced about 250 shots I am happy with and even about 20 that must be the best digital photo's I took in over 10 years, since I own a digital camera (Nikon 990 and Nikon D70). And results come with much less PP than with the Nikon. I think the D70 will stay at home most of the time from now on. This is amazing! Also this camera handles much more like my good old Nikon FE than any other digital I know. It stimulates you to think about the shot before you start to frame it in a way only the old simple FE and FM could do. (shot with both for 20+ years) Of course the D2 has limitations and a lot of things that were great in 2004 but could be improved a lot in 2010. But i did not regret buying the D2 for a second since I have it. My only hope is that Leica will bring out a worthy successor for the D2 soon, so that I can buy that second hand in 2014 to retire the D2. Thank you Thorsten. Without your website and your excellent reviews, I would never have bought a 5MP second hand camera to replace my D70. You saved me about 2000 Euros for not buying a M8. We'll see after shooting with the D2 for a while how I feel about buying a real rangefinder.
Overgaard Posted September 6, 2009 Share #33 Posted September 6, 2009 You are welcome. And on the forum as well! It's a very easy camera to use in the sense that it is very predictable what you will get when you shoot. It's not like many other cameras where things work out you didn't think would, and things you thought would look great, doesn't. With the D2 it mostly works out the way you predicted. That too is a rare quality, and one we should take note of. Because I think that is the most common complaint I hear about cameras, that people simply don't understand what the camera is doing. Anyways, you have the bug and there's no way back. It's in your future, M9, X1 and many more Leica cameras
jobjob Posted September 7, 2009 Share #34 Posted September 7, 2009 Congratulation to your Digilux2 and your nice first shots. For mine i take the bag from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1 very cheap on the bay. This protection is very usefull cause for me the DL2 is not a "nice weather" camera and i can carry it easy and save. farnz Posted September 7, 2009 Share #35 Posted September 7, 2009 Jobjob, Does the screen shroud dig into your cheek when you look through the EVF? As a left-eyed shooter it looks like the shroud would do battle with my nose. Pete.
integrale Posted September 7, 2009 Share #36 Posted September 7, 2009 JobJob: your LC1 case looks very nice and practical; Is the halfcase shown in the latter pictures part of the case? I did a search on ebay without hitting anything similar to your case. Can you provide a link to the vendor?
jobjob Posted September 7, 2009 Share #37 Posted September 7, 2009 Hi Pete, I have no problems with the LCD hood and I`m wearing glasses. It is a very clever construction with two magnetic stripes so it fit`s good enough but can be put away very easy. JJ

I did a search on ebay without hitting anything similar to your case. Can you provide a link to the vendor? Yes, the halfcase is included. The LC1 have had a grip and so the bag have a grip form at the left side looking from front. But this is no problem for fitting (i use it as a pocket for an sd card). It is an original assecoiers from Panasonic for the LC1. Last month i saw one again on ebay for 15 euros. So use the automatic notification function on ebay. Or check google with "Panasonic PS-114" (this was the name of the case in Germany) JJ
