Shootist Posted August 10, 2009 Share #181 Posted August 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I cannot believe it either... The M8.2 seems to be out of stock... here in Spain. Leica doesn't serve more units... B&H in NY city has M8's black instock (No silver units and not even listed) and silver and black M8.2's. But they could be there last units. The M8 is going for 2 grand less then the M8.2 which is 1,000 more then the M8 cost new at release. It is the same camera as the M8. The shutter cost no more then the original M8 and the newer LCD screen can't cost 1000 more and the machine that punches out the frame lines certainly take X amount of money to set up for the new frames. I'm just glad I bought my M8's and new lenses when I did.
Advertisement Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Hi Shootist, Take a look here Leica refuses to confirm M9 launch.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted August 10, 2009 Share #182 Posted August 10, 2009 ...A 5,500 euro price for the M9 translates to $7,789 US at today's rates - that's a worst-case scenario that assumes the euro price doesn't include VAT. If it does, the US price (before tax) would be about 15% +/- lower - $6,779... Being directed to customers, the French price should include 19.6% VAT normally. Hence 4,600 EUR w/o VAT i.e. 6,500 USD in round figures.
mat_mcdermott Posted August 10, 2009 Share #183 Posted August 10, 2009 At that price USD I'd be really surprised if it was FF. Thrilled, but very surprised.

adan Posted August 10, 2009 Share #186 Posted August 10, 2009 Thanks, lct. Yah, I have doubts about the M9 anytime soon, and about the price. But you never know. If CEO Spiller has decided that it's better to move 5,000 units this fall @ Eu500 profit each - for cash flow - than to move 1,000 units at Eu1,500 profit each.... Realistically, at this point there is going to to a crescendo of rumor up until Sept. 9 - at which point there will either be resounding silence from Leica, or interesting news, or REALLY interesting news. Nicoleica Posted August 10, 2009 Share #187 Posted August 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just to cast a little more fuel onto the fires of speculation.... Some rumours are that Leica will be announcing developments to a 'system' camera. Don't forget that the D-Lux4 was announced as a 'system' camera. Perhaps the announcements may concern that, and not an 'M8.x', 'M9' etc.

Jamie Roberts Posted August 10, 2009 Share #190 Posted August 10, 2009 At that price USD I'd be really surprised if it was FF. Thrilled, but very surprised. Um, why? $8000 for a full-frame 35mm digicam?! Only a handful of full frame digital cameras are that expensive, or more. This is an M-body camera we're talking about, and most of the RD had to have been split among the old R10 and S2 initiatives. It should be $6k US to grow share and solidify Leica's presence. Otherwise, the next Nikon will take even more away from future Leica sales--even of an M9.

Comment was based on the $6500 figure mentioned by adan, not $8000 -- would love to see a FF M come in at USD 6000 but somehow, given the way prices have been going up at Leica, I'd be surprised that's all. Would make marketing sense to keep the price down to avoid pushing people away, though.
jl4069 Posted August 10, 2009 Share #193 Posted August 10, 2009 Ok so if we say this rumor is correct what can we infer IF the sensor is FF and 18mp is it from the same cloth as the S2's? I thought that would work out to 24mp's? Something different here? JL
adan Posted August 10, 2009 Share #194 Posted August 10, 2009 18 Mpixels would be what a 24 x 36 sensor would hold if the pixels are the same 6.8-micron pixels as the current M8 sensor - 5250 x 3500 or thereabouts. That could mean the camera store is just making a WAG based on the same math I used... OTOH, staying with 6.8-micron pixels would make it easier to control noise than with 6-micron - all else being equal. The S2 tie might be the Maestro processor, which may be able to delver better noise reduction processing. Here's a question for French/European lawyers - if this store has offered the M9 for Eu 5500 and takes orders, is that a firm legal committment? Are they required to provide it at that price to those who pre-order, even if Leica ultimately announces it at a higher price?

The web page says that the prices are just an indication of what you may be charged. I.e. subject to change.
lct Posted August 10, 2009 Share #196 Posted August 10, 2009 Yes 'Les prix sont indicatifs' means that prices are subject to change.
zlatkob Posted August 10, 2009 Share #197 Posted August 10, 2009 I just hope they retained the battery. Retaining the battery would only make sense if they couldn't make a much better one. At some point it's better to have a better battery, even if different.
jl4069 Posted August 11, 2009 Share #198 Posted August 11, 2009 Andy, thanks for the sensor stuff. One more ques if I could... So in some ways the 6.8 micron M9 (if it exists) might take cleaner pics than the S2 at (smaller) certain sizes? An interesting comparison the two camera's might end up making... J
adan Posted August 11, 2009 Share #199 Posted August 11, 2009 I'd hate to speculate based on a rumored pixel size. All other things being equal, bigger pixels should produce cleaner pix - but we have no way of knowing whether all things are equal in comparing the S2 sensor to a hypothetical M9 sensor. Just far too few technical details on either sensor, yet. Both the S2 and the "M9" sensors may involve technological changes aside from pixel size - or not. -------- Stuns and lct: Thanks for noting the caveat. BTW I emailed my Leica rep about the "leak" - t'will be interesting to see if Leica makes the store take down the listing. It will be even more interesting to see how this forum interprets it if the store DOES take down the listing - as "proof" that something's really in the works, or as "proof" that it was all a mistake.
