Plenty of threads, use the search. Plenty of conjecture, then the confirmations from Leica themsleves. Done, dusted, gone, finished, no more, never. Dont bother waiting up. Start researching the adaptor ring threads if you want to use your R lenses digital, or find an old DMR.

I have done the search and they have a large variety of replies. Some positive and some negative. Which ones are current and accurate.

Please respond if you have more than just an opinion. Thanks for reconsidering this thread again.:)

.......it's a matter of your own choice .................everyone else does the same on this forum.

I would be surprised that they developed the S2, with as small a market as it will have at its price, without looking at making a smaller but more popular version of it, i.e. the R10.

Thinking the same, but no statements have been made since they said they would do this and the R10. So we really don't know.

Since when has Leica had any German-made products that were "viable" competitors? The DSLR market is much larger than the rangefinder market, but I'm guessing that the M8 gets much of the sales it gets because it's a digital German-made Leica, not because the customers really prefer a rangefinder design.

>>There will be no digital SLR aka R10.

>>But there will be a suitable solution how to use R lenses digitally. It's very important to us, that owners of R lenses can take pictures digitally in the near future.

>>There is no due date for the new solution.

>>Definitely it's not going to be a SLR.

>>This solution will have nothing to do to with the S2.

>>Therefore the R system is discontinued, the existing system runs out.

Stefan Daniel

That seems very unambiguous to me. Time to move out of the denial phase, folks.

Maybe it'll be a new compact back for R8/R9 with a full frame sensor outsourced from Panasonic... Or perhaps they'll sell the rights to the mount to Panasonic, who can then make autofocus lenses for it while retaining backward compatibility... perhaps I'm dreaming :(

My thoughts are that the R10 replacement will be something like a full frame Panasonic G1.

In other words a full frame DSLR with EVF.

Probably Panasonic will make such a camera anyway and Leica will then just rebrand it as a Leica and use the old R mount or sell an adaptor to fit manual focus R lenses.

Well looking into what was said, you would have to consider an outsourced FF

but lets look at that critically

1/ if its not an SLR, its EVIL, it has to be

2/ if the R mount lenses are out of production, who would take that on?

3/ I guess we all have Panasonic in the back of our minds, but they are not exactly known for an output in lenses, so just how many AF lenses would they produce if it were them, not many.

If you were looking for who to include, and who to discount

I think you could cancel all of these, Sony, Canon, Nikon

And hold some of these, Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji, Pentax.

I dont see Olympus having the development capital (too busy with mFT), Fuji could, they shared Nikon mount lenses, but theyre struggling with APS and S6. Pentax are a maybe, but have no FF interests with a lot of their new kit being APS based glass. That leaves Panasonic.

It would seem to me that 2 lens groups is as much as a company can handle and do a complete job of it. Canon have EF and EFS, Nikon run 2 groups, Olympus have 4/3rds and mFT, and Panasonic, having dropped 4/3rds, ........

could they be considering a FF mount with EVIL?

Who is EVIL? I only knew Microsoft, but I don't think you mean them... or are they going to partner with North Corea? :D

Some good points Riley.

Panasonic and Sony have always been big competitors.

Since Sony picked up Minolta's camera system they have gone into it the big time.

However Panasonic still lags behind Sony in this area, playing with that 4/3 system didn't help.

The perfect opportunity is there in waiting, it's called the Leica R system.

By creating a Digital Body for the R system, they pick up an immediate and established clientele whom have been using all those beautiful Manual focus R lenses for over 40 years, however all newer lenses should be auto focus as Panasonic needs to move forward to attract the younger market as well.

As Leica dumped the R system, the Lens mount should be open to other independant lens manufactories to make Lenses for the Panasonic system should it take up the cause.

If it's done right, it could do very well for them much better then that 4/3 system.

It could even be called the Pana Integra system.

However this could hurt the M system, is Leica prepered to take the chance, I doubt it.

Just my thoughs

Ken.

Sony succeeded b/se they marketed the old Minolta system better, when they began with this, that system was barely any better than what Konica/Minolta walked away from. Sony took to this by using their existing sales points and succeeded where KM didnt. If Panasonic are to do the same, then the same strategy applies, you would see this body wherever you see Panasonic branding.

Im a bit troubled by Leica dropping R lenses though, this means a great dependence on s/h hardware. If Panny were doing this, wouldnt Leica be wise to continue the R line, and supplement lenses just as CZ do for Sony. Its after all exactly the same position.

I just get the feeling something is missing here, someone has been overlooked. Perhaps Contax /Cosina, after all Contax N are a viable AF lens suite not too different in AF capacity to EOS EF mount (they can be converted to EOS).

Its a mystery, it really is

I can see Panasonic stalking for a larger format, at one time I thought they might be up for Pentax, at a price from Hoya. Around this time, a German based web site made a claim that Panasonic was dropping 4/3rds, and were looking at a larger format. It became obvious that Panasonic put a lot of pressure on diefotoredaktion.de/, and subsequently the publication was pulled, with a complete disclaimer. In the events afterwards though, Panasonic dropped 4/3rds. You do get the feeling that someone, who is a photographer, pulls a few strings over at Panasonic, there products reflect this. If someone is behind this in a design capacity, it would be Makoto Nakamura, designer of L1.
