franklinh Posted November 10, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) As I write this, there are over 100 members viewing in the Digital Forum, and under 10 in the film forum. The ratio was even larger in favor of the Digital forum last night. I wonder, have we all of a sudden forgotten about film Leicas? Personal reflection: On the lead up to the M8 announcement and release there was a fever pitch of excitement and speculation and leaked photos and specs? We couldn't get enought of the M8! Now that it's released, we are crushed it is less than "perfect", and the sky is falling for some and not for others. Maybe we are bipolar about this stuff. It's going to save the leica tradition, the M8! No, it's not, says the doubters. I liked stami's post, It's only a camera. Technology is not going to save us and allow us photographers to finally visualize the world as it is, or how we see it. So you guys viewing in the digital section, go pick up your film Leica and start a thread in the Film forum. That's right: inhale/exhale, inhale/exhale. I just bought an Elmar-M 50mm (slow) 2.8 collapsible lens. Has a nice smell. It looks so cool! When my Ricoh GR-digital comes tomorrow by FEDEX from Tony Rose, I'll take a digital photo of me fondling my film Leica M3 with the Elmar. Look for it! Then on the weekend I'll post some photos taken with it...... Franklin

Hehe Franklin, this says it all, for some people digital is good enough for snapshots but the others fondle their Elmar on a digital body.

pascal_meheut Posted November 10, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 10, 2006 I liked stami's post, It's only a camera. It is not. It is the survival of Leica. What do you think will happen if the M8 fails massively ? And yes, when a big event occurs, people talk a lot about it and less about what is well known. brunom Posted November 10, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 10, 2006 Well if it's any help Fuji have recently announced that they are to introduce a new Velvia 50 onto the UK market next spring - so it appears that at least one major film producer hasn't given up on film. One of the complaints about using K64 has been the excessive time needed to get results back - but surely with digital prevailing in most professional areas there is a case for using films such as K64 for personal use - especially if the lab could supply good quality scans on CD for 'normal' use whilst you would have the back up of very good slides in storage? hamey Posted November 10, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 10, 2006 Oh yes, we Film lovers are quite content with what we got. We no very well the limations of Film, if we are not satisfied with one type we buy the other. We don't need to worry about Bending, Raw files, Magenta, 4/3, FF, Lens crop, Etc. Yes we go about our business, same Film sensor for either R or M, don't have to worry about white balance, just compose, focus, and fire. I sappose really, film photography is so SIMPLE and problem free, that it gets boring sometimes. It has'nt changed for decades, so not much to talk about except the weather perhaps. Yes it's SO PERFECT that most of us are very very happy. However so much entertenment on the Digital forum that I look forward for the next instalments in the Digital dramas as we wait for the next climax. Cheers. Lucklik Posted November 10, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 10, 2006 It is nice and quiet in the film and customer foras these days, don't let people know - you might wake someone up I think it is clear that film is mature. Most of the digital post are regarding problems because digital is still premature. Luc
mwilliamsphotography Posted November 10, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 10, 2006 Perhaps those shooting film are actually out shooting, while the digital mavens are talking about shooting on the digital forum ; -) While the M8 I received last Saturday has gone back in the box to await Leica's response to the issues identified by forum members, my MP3 sits next to my car keys like a puppy waiting to go for a walk. pierovitch Posted November 10, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 10, 2006 Just try finding the undo function on a developing tank;) The film forum folks are in the darkroom having a good time. Cheers Pierre
earleygallery Posted November 10, 2006 Share #15 Posted November 10, 2006 It is rather amusing that someone buying a $5000 camera rushes home with it, charges up the battery and then spends their first hours using it to photograph assorted black fabrics and bright lights at night! (but I really hope that Leica sort the issues out very soon and it becomes a great success story)
clayh Posted November 10, 2006 Share #16 Posted November 10, 2006 I think the large number of people viewing the digital forum this week is due to the same aspect of human nature that causes traffic to slow down so people can look at car wrecks. mwilliamsphotography Posted November 10, 2006 Share #17 Posted November 10, 2006 Well James, I find shooting fabrics and bright lights prefferable to shooting an entire wedding featuring said fabrics and bright lights before testing the camera ... and then discoveing the issues. It would make for an interesting phone call to the client wouldn't it?
earleygallery Posted November 10, 2006 Share #18 Posted November 10, 2006 Marc, Yes, but you shouldn't have to. Anyway looks like the IR filters are working so at least you can put the camera to work until the proper fix is ready, which is great news.
Woody Campbell Posted November 10, 2006 Share #19 Posted November 10, 2006 When people have M8s to shoot (rather than just talking about them) they will probably spend less time here.
