So with the end of the R line is it a good idea to buy this stuff and wait and hope or to buy into a canon body to use the lenes?? My luck would be I would get a canon and then Leica will come out with something to use the R glass on.

Also a update on the Leica 13338 no one has one anywhere all in private hands. It must have bin a very limited production item.

I've just off loaded several lenses on ebay in May and early June, there's still a relatively "strong" demand for the latest ROM and last gen. 3 CAM lenses, I've made money from all sales but that being said, it's probably only because that I bought them "too cheap".

Most of these buyers are likely going to use them with Canons based on the impression I gathered from questions they've asked.

Older stuff are always a tough sell and prices have been constantly under water.

If you're switching to Canon or Nikon, both have some very good optics if you are not going to split hairs or let the love factor hindering your sight ... also you can choose from the ZF and ZE models but using manual focus lenses on a AF camera is always a pain in the butt.

Not always Simon. Matter of tastes & practice. I prefer MF when i'm not in a hurry personally.

I have been an R or reflex user since 1973, with several lenses in my collection, at this time I have no intention of unloading them.

I love manual focus, I love looking through my R glass unlike my M7.

M users never get the chance to look through those gorgeous lenses.

At presant all my Leicas are used on SLIDE FILM and NO intention of changing, after all it's the finest medium where Leica Lenses are superb.

I am keeping my R lenses because you will never see the likes of them again.

Today I took some shots with my R7 and the 50mm f2, was I proud, knowing that they no longer make this gear.

Matter of generation i guess. Young photogs are so used to watch video games that they need the same feeling when they take photographs. :p

can't say that you're wrong, LCT ... the vintage games give you the kind of feeling too, especially when they're tried on obsolete hardware. :)

There is one thing that bothers me is that when parts run out for the R line cameras they will have to

scrap out other R cameras to fix yours. Think there is a thread that says around 2 years for that to happen. This is the way it was for my canon A1 body. I have picked up and sold four A1's before I got one close to mint. That was better than waiting for a long time for the camera store to get a used one to scrap out to fix the one I got new when they first came out.

.The pluss now is one can pick up used R8 cheap and for a tad more used R9's. That is how I got my R8.

Now long lenses are a different matter and it is true nothing like looking threw a R8 with a 280mm f/4 with a ground glass viewfinder. Wonderfull.

Anyone thinking of selling everything and getting the S camera?

I'm struggling with this too.

On the other hand, my DMR and R9 are still working very well but I can't get a back-up in the same shape.

The lenses are gorgeous, and they will be the last I sell. if I had the money I'd buy a couple of extras at the current fire sale prices and convert them to Nikon...

I wish Leica would be more forthcoming on the R solution, but that's not evidently, going to happen.

That figure of two years is absolute nonsense. The parts storage of Leica Customer service is absolutely amazing. They even stock parts for cameras that go back to well before WWII. The only problem child could be the DMR, but there was an agreement between Dr Kaufmann and the Danes last week that will secure repairability for a considerable number of years.

I don't understand why anyone would want to sell their R-gear, just because it's no longer being manufactured. Heck, the equipment still works, the photos are still excellent, the service is still being done reliably. So, unless you are dissatisfied with your R-equipment, or having manual focus issues, why would anyone get rid of it?

Don't think so. Leica seem to have supplies of everything. I had my black SL mot serviced four year ago with new bommom plate, new front, new dials and all. It mean they had new parts in stock for 30+ years waiting for my little Leicaflex.

On the other hand, I have M lenses there right now from 1974 where they don't have all parts. So at some point ... but not that soon!

There's four answers to your question:

1) DMR

2) New R-camera (whatever it is)

3) Portable E6 color lab with digital output via Imacon scanner

4) S2

For y part, the DMR will service me for another 4-5 years unless topped by the new R offering or S2. I might even get a backup.

5) Canon are for those who already has to have Canon for their other jobs. I don't see it's worth it: Canon+Leica lens is better than Canon+Canon lens, but it's not as good as DMR with Leica lens.

6) Digilux 3 with R adapter could work as well if the 2x crop factor suits the way one shoot.

To make my point, here's a shot from the old, obsolete, classic DMR:

Jamie, if you offload the DMR now, it's a pretty safe bet that you can still get US3500+ if it's still in decent condition. I've never thought nor worried about this because 1) it keeps working fine and I love the results I get. 2) $3500 probably won't make much difference in my next round of gear upgrade 'cause it's most likely anything that I'll pick up is going to cost more than that.

I've decided to sell some R lenses mainly due to 2 reasons ... some issues I can't handle nor live with such as focus drift at wide apertures, and some lenses that I don't really like nor use much, such as the E55 50 lux (and you love it ... yes I know ... :) ) ... I sold the 80/1.4 too. But now I still have two zoomers, 5 primers and that probably won't change again.

There will be no R solution IMO, if someone wants to wait, please keep doing so.

Leica has already made a mistake by killing the R10 in favor of S2 - abandoning an existing/loyal customer base in pursuit of a non-existent niche ... now if they come back working on a "R solution" just to comfort a bunch of grumpy old customers after 2-3 years, that's even worse and would be too late.

Leica will learn very quickly, the bunch of so-called "high end working pros" probably will never give so much damn to the red dot like the blind amateurs have done in more than half a century, if they can dump Hasselblad, Phase One for any reason, they can also dump Leica in no time.

I'm sticking with my R8/DMR and R lenses as long as they are working. With the history that i have had, this should be a very long time. While I would like to have a S2, but it just is not going to happen, due to price. R lenses are fantastic, so why get rid of them?

I should have added, there are currently at least seven working R solutions so there's absolutely no need for Leica to bother with it.

1. film

2. DMR

3. EOS adapter

4. Leitax/Nikon

5. 4/3 adapter

6. paperweight

7. door stopper

You guys can carry on, there must be more ...

Probably time to stop screwing round and just have a look at what will do the job conveniently and affectively. No one ever looks at an image and says if only it had been taken with a Leica it would have been whatever. And no one ever has a comparison shot to pour over which is more appealing. Leica have been on winners before and rested back on their laurels. It will take an effort to change whatever ethos they presently indulge.

So dont worry...be happy. Buy something if you can use it, stuff it back up in the ceiling if you cant.
