My M5 is wonderful, stick a meter on my M4 and its clunky, pick up my M6 and get frame line clutter, grab an M7 and feel middle aged spread in a thickening body, hold an M240 and wallow in obesity. The M5 so cool.

Sounds like you need a CL and Zeiss Ikon to round out the comparisons!

...really can't understand why you feel the need to knock other models, just so you can feel good with your M5, AdamSinger. Enjoy your cool camera.

Hello!

I just got an M5 and I'm tuly excited because this one is in PRISTINE condition and I can't wait to shoot with it. I have a 35mm f/2 Summicron to go with it and I'm ready to go...this is my first Leica M. I have used Leica R cameras in the past, and currently have an R4 with a Vario-Elmar 35-70mm, which I absolutely love. I also have a Leica D-LUX5 which is also amazing. I've certainly drank the Leica Kool-Aid and I'm not looking back.....the proof is in the pudding.

My question is: The previous owner used PX625A alkaline and said he never had any issues but I want to know if I should use the CRIS MR 9 battery adapter with the silver oxide 386 battery. I used one of these adapters years ago with an old Canonet and the meter worked beautifully. The thing is the previous owner of the M5 never knew if the camera's meter was ever adjusted to use 1.5v alkalines, but used them anyway. Does anyone have any advice? How can you tell if the meter was ever adjusted to 1.5v?

Thank you!

Test it against another camera or meter using the same subject and lighting conditions.

I'm still shooting my first roll of Tmax 400 through my "new" M5. Loving it so far, the 35mm lens is quite easy to shoot with, since the frame lines almost cover the entire viewfinder. What a machine this is!!!

Question: I have a SF-20 that I used in auto on my R4 and was wondering if it's ok to use on the M5? Could I use auto or will I have to use it in manual?

Thank you!

I've ran two rolls of B&W Tmax through my "new" M5 with 35mm Summicron f/2 and I'm loving the results. So different from anything I've shot with before, including my R4 w/35-70mm Vario -Elmar.

I think I've got a keeper here!!! Why did I wait so long to get a Leica M, I can't tell you!

The first shot is with Tmax 100, taken in the Bronx, NYC and the second shot of the Standard Hotel in Manhattan was shot with Tmax 400. I scanned them on an Epson V330 at 3200dpi and the only post processing I did was to remove some dust spots. This is what I love about B&W films.....you get it right in the camera and you're done. I know the "standard" with Leica M film cameras has always been with 400 B&W films like TriX or Tmax but I think for my style and tastes, I really like the deeper blacks of the 100 Tmax.

Here's my M5 w/ the 'cron 35mm f/2. Greatest camera ever. When you nail the light and exposure, the images are simply insane. All hail the M5!

It's well over 9 months now that I use my beater M5. I guess I'm sold. The perceived slightly smaller (and a little foggy...) finder is perhaps the only real drawback, compared to the MP. Might well get the M5 it CLA'd, to clear the finder, but also because the speed dial got misaligned recently: numbers and click stops don't coincide any longer.

The meter is still spot on, or at least so say my better slides; very convenient to have the speed in the finder. OK, having to meter before turning the camera into vertical is a bit of a pain. But compared to exposing slides in an M3 with the MR4 on top, it's fine.

The body feels less dense than the MP's or even M3's, more hollow, so to speak; but the size and shape fit well into my hands and I have the M3 for the magic M body geometry. By now I managed to get the sling attached to the M5, while using a detachable strap on the lower left and the right lug (seen from behind). Any slightly heavier lens (e.g. 50 DR) will toggle the camera so as to be carried back door up, bottom and lens snugly against the side. Excellent.

Basically, I'm thinking about selling my MP, before it turns totally into male jewelry... The M5 is that good indeed and I feel it does all I need. I just realized how much it grew on me when I took the last roll out before traveling back from a trip; the shutter snapped weirdly, I couldn't wind, release stayed down. Thought it was seriously broken but had no time to check. At home I unpacked and sighed when the M5 wound on smoothly and the shutter struck the chord again... Can't wait to load the next roll.

Cheers,

Alexander

All: first blush, just opened the box 45 minutes ago-WOW factor is high-love it, much lighter than what I anticipated being I never held one, the size/fits in my hand is perfect, the exposure info in VF is genius and not sure why they left this technology versus the blinking red triangles-shutter speed dial is great, do not have to take my eye off VF, you see what the meter see's and shows shutter speed selected(in window) and a matching needle system of what the spot meter is reading based on shutter selected-nice- thus you can see real time of what you should expect visually,-I imagine that my keeper rate will improve by X + %, my 35 Cron is on it now and wow- a great 35 MM FOV . just loaded film in it- going to dinner with a friend this evening who will have to share my attention/focus over dinner with the M5….I may trade my M6 for a 50 being the only lens I have is a 35….. so very pleased! now I get it guys & girls- best secret Leica has

Well, I wouldn't call it love, but the M5 now has my preference... it just fits. Had it cleaned and adjusted earlier this year — and just sold my MP. As a smaller and lighter companion, I found a nice CL, where the M-Rokkor 40mm will be at home, once it returns from the seller with a hopefully properly adjusted meter ().

Btw, I filed my Rokkor's flange to bring up the 35mm framelines. OK, I wasn't very accurate, but while it worked on the MP, it didn't on the M5 (where also wedging the frameline lever doesn't work 'coz it triggers the battery test). Strange.

Here is an image of my Leica M5 with a Zeiss Biogon 25mm f/2.8 and the Cosina Voigtlander 15-35 mm Zoom Viewfinder (a really handy addition for wide angle lenses)
