andit Posted February 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) In one of the Customer Forum threads, Michael had the following to say... Ha ha, it sounds to me that you are already half-way to an incurable disease which causes you to spend vast sums of money and hide cameras and lenses from your partner. I would say you are already infected and there is no known cure. Do a search here for "Chrome or Black?" and you will see this is an endless unanswerable question for the Leica user. "What is the meaning of life?" would be easier to master. Welcome and enjoy. Now it's time to have some fun with this thread. How many people actually hide camera's and lenses from their partners ? I'm guilty of this, having just sneaked in a 50mm Summicron for my M8 Time to be honest, have you done this yet? Andreas

BerndReini Posted February 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 28, 2009 Of course I have, who hasn't? I've hidden complete camera systems. Have you ever said to your wife: "Oh that? It's old, I've had that for years."
Guest bwcolor Posted February 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 28, 2009 My wife is so nice and so polite as to avert her eyes at any hint of some new jewelry dangling from my neck.
russell c. greenberg Posted February 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2009 I must be really lucky. 20 years ago, my wife bought me a black paint M2 for the holidays. I will go to my grave with this one, never will I sell it, I might pass it on to my daughter as a family heirloom with the warning that if she sells it, my ghost will come back to haunt her. Venkman Posted February 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2009 My girlfriend bought the M8 for me - why should I hide it?
Bo_Lorentzen Posted February 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted February 28, 2009 My girlfriend know where I keep the lenses... no hiding anything.. she is a avid photographer and well aware of what each lens does and what I want for birthdays. her current camera is the Panasonic G1 which she prefers because of the weight. though she prefer the e520 for internal image stabilization for nature photography. . holgerf Posted February 28, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 28, 2009 No reason to hide, my wife knows my vice / passion. Even she once presented leica binoculars as a gift to me Cheers Holger
Eoin Posted February 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted February 28, 2009 No need to hide for me... My partner has an pension for Louis Vuitton... Sounds to close to home to be funny. I know some people just don't get Leica, but I as a photographer can see the difference. I'm having a hard time justifying the current cost to my self. As for Louis V, I really can't get with it at all, but it keeps the better half happy and once she's happy everyone else is happy. As far as Leica and her are concerned, Leica ran a marketing campaign in Thailand some time back, optical quality was the theme with some poor girl complaining "I hate Leica" because it showed every defect. It obviously had an impact on her because she's of the same opinion, you see every blemish. Yet she doesn't want me to sell it.
Printmaker Posted February 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted February 28, 2009 No can do... self employment and small business taxes being what they are my wife (the bookkeeper) and our accountant start talking in November and by early December I'm told what I can or need to spend to avoid a big tax bill. Printers, computers, cameras and then lenses are the order of priority. Some years I get them all; this year I got a cheap Xerox laser printer, a laptop and a lens sent to DAG for coding. (Thank you Ex King George and your thieves on Wall Street). Maybe next year she'll tell me to buy a M9... or the year after... or the year after... LichMD Posted February 28, 2009 Share #11 Posted February 28, 2009 No need. My wife knows and supports my interest in photography. Watches and wine, well that's another issue.
Chuckcars Posted February 28, 2009 Share #12 Posted February 28, 2009 If I were to hide it she would smoke it out of me only because of the guilty look on my face. It's kinda self defeating to make an attempt.
jaapv Posted February 28, 2009 Share #13 Posted February 28, 2009 My wife takes a dim view of my photography - yet she gave me a coupon for a new Leica just before the M8 came out -. We have a system where she pretends not to notice new stuff - provided we fly through Johannesburg from time to time (known for its diamond shops ) and I take some time for another hobby - designing jewelry. tbarker13 Posted March 1, 2009 Share #14 Posted March 1, 2009 Nah, my wife does think I'm a little crazy with buying and selling gear. But all in all, she's very encouraging of my photography. And, really, I don't find myself hiding anything from her.

stuny Posted March 1, 2009 Share #17 Posted March 1, 2009 Over the years Barbara has bought for me an R8, an 80-200 zoom, a 60 MM macro, en Elpro for the D2 and a DMR. Sometimes she hid those things from me until the event for giving came around.

rsh Posted March 1, 2009 Share #19 Posted March 1, 2009 Amusing thread. Makes me smile. My wife doesn't encourage or discourage. She is a Trademark Lawyer, I have my own business and we have a 13 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. We both work extremely hard. Her vices are jewelry and Antique Markets. Mine are watches and Leicas. We understand that we need our vices in order to keep our sanity.
leïkon68 Posted March 1, 2009 Share #20 Posted March 1, 2009 Never done, my first M4 was a big present from my wife. She never complained when I decided to buy a M6. Problem ( except find the money ) is not to hide, I wouldn't, but to find the right words to explain another expensive camera a few months after a new yellow D700. I can say that I am wery happy, my partner support my passion. Recently, she discouraged me to sell the M6 when I started to speak about financing an enventual M8. It's only a mater of time.
