They've placed the Super Elmar in slot 52 in the lens code table. Skipping one (51) so the code is 110100.

Edit: from the lens code table it looks like the lens will bring up the 50/75 lines - strange.....

My wife's verdict is that it makes very little difference on my M8 - one of the very first released.

The shutter firing is the noise she hears and she says she can barely hear the delayed cocking anyway. So that settles the matter!

A very marginal improvement on an original M8 but I guess it would be a much bigger improvement on an M8u.

I'm not in the market for any of the upgrades, I'd quite like the better frames but I can manage. I'll wait for an M camera with significant advantages over my M8 and then buy one.

Ok I installed this new firmware on 2 M8's.

What I find is the sound of the shutter actuating about the same and totally different then using B on the shutter speed dial.

I hear the first clunk, the shutter opening and closing, at the correct timing, then a second clunk at the closing of the shutter. Once I release the shutter button I then hear the faint whirr of the rewind.

On B you don't get the second clunk until the shutter closes and then the instant whirr.

In all honesty the whirr is barely noticeable in discrete mode but the original clunking is still there.

Now if you have a M8u camera this is a nice feature but for the original M8 it really does little to nothing for the overall sound.

I agree totally with shootist. The original (offensive part) of the sound is still there. Separating the very soft whirr of the rewind does nothing for 'discreteness, IMO. I don't serious believe it will improve real stealth shooting other than massage the photographers perception of stealth.

Nevertheless, I applaud leica for giving what was asked for. I hope it truly benefits many of the 'askers' for this feature.

I'll report on how it is with the M8u tomorrow. The M8.2 is the quietest digital camera I've worked with (I'm exluding digicams in this), and I'm hoping that the upgraded M8 will give me equivalent functionality. Quiet mode on the 5D.2 is almost useless for me as you have to be in Liveview mode to use it. I've not had a chance to hear quite mode on 1 series Canons or the high end Nikons (but I understand it's good).

i agree, the discrete mode is not a silent mode, what makes the real sound is the clunking, the opening

and closing of the shutter (i would say almost in an old fashioned slr way, not in a leica m way), and not

the much less loud whirr that takes place later, in 'discretion'

next four days i will see in paris if people will indeed pay less attention than before when i make a

picture, i will look to it that they will not have a chance to hear the whirr after the clunk...

i am very much pleased about the fact that leica comes with firmware upgrades now and then, after

25 years of using leica they never let me down

cheers

On my M8u it works perfectly, the improvement is noticeable, even if the major one was made when I upgraded the shutter... Anyway the recocking is really the most silent part of the entire shooting.

BTW I'm happy with this!

True, the loudest sound is certainly the shutter firing on mine. I always found the combined sound to be quite clunky (excuse pun) and toy-like before the option to decouple shutter and recharging. It sounded cheap.

Now, my old M8 sounds very similar to my M7, with a quiet whirr that follows when I decide. It may or may not genuinely be more discreet in the real world, but I certainly prefer it this way. Good one, Leica!

The Leica M8 Lens Code page (see my signature) has been updated, thanks!

btw: where is the lens with "value 51"??

Any ideas?

Something more in the pipeline in Solms?

Hi Jeffrey,Right. But...

I was taking pictures of people last year, outside/street. Among them was a photograph teacher of a well known faculty of Arts in Germany (she use Canon).

She said to me: " what a beautiful sound! " :)

So...

Hi Philippe,

That's nice to hear. I've also had the same thing said to me by a very nice lady friend who's also a photographer. She uses Nikons!

I think the photographer teacher probably expects something special from your M8 because she knows it's a Leica. The Leica's reputation tends to precede it!

It is an interesting sound, just a bit too noticeable for an M.

Jeffrey.

Yay! It's posted!

BUT it's misspelled!

Discreet is what it should be, not discrete.

I hope the correct spelling is in the new on camera command, otherwise we'll need a further update.

Hi Erl,

It may encourage more people to do the shutter upgrade since the upgrade plus delayed cocking is a great combination.

Cheers,

Sean

I don't recall ever reading so many happy posts in a Leica forum and the update has only been available for a few hours too. :D

Maybe CornerFix ...

I'm glad to read them and hope people who are happy keep taking time to write.

Cheers,

Sean
