Correct Stefan......

A more distant view of the other side of the breakwater at the harbour and one looking the other way down the coast. The Asturias and the Picos de Europa are a beautiful but overlooked part of spain in the north that is very green and wonderful for walking. Well worth a trip......

YOUR TURN !!!

regards, steve

Looks beautiful in a rugged way.

So, can anyone tell me where one finds this variation on a clock tower?

Looks like a Colonial clock tower... south-eastern U.S.?

I was also thinking US colonial, perhaps someplace like Nantucket.

Nantucket is closer. While it looks colonial it's a 20th century memorial to fallen WWI dead.

Memorial Bell Tower

Phillips Academy, Andover.

There was an interesting article about it when I hunted which others may be interested in......

Thanks for an instructive post.... even though it took me all of 2 minutes to locate it via google !

June 12, 2006 — Despite the rainy Reunion Weekend, more than 500 people filled Cochran Chapel for a formal rededication ceremony of the Memorial Bell Tower. The ceremony celebrated completion of a $5.1 million restoration project that began in the winter of 2005.

The tower was dismantled and rebuilt, brick by brick, in order to correct engineering flaws that had compromised the structural integrity of the building and that ultimately forced the bells into silence in 1989. As much of the original fabric of the building as possible was salvaged and reused for the reconstruction, most notably the entire three-tiered wood belfry that forms the upper half of the structure.

Though the reconstructed tower appears identical to the original tower built in 1923, right down to the recut engravings in the Deer Island granite blocks at the base of the building, the structure has been fitted with an enhanced set of bells that is configured with a touch-sensitive electronic system. The system features a keyboard on the ground floor that is used to sound the bells, which remain stationary when played. In total, the new tower holds 49 bells, 19 of which were used in the original tower.

In all, 2,222 Andover students, alums, and faculty members served in uniform in World War I. The Bell Tower was constructed in memory of the 85 who died

Wow! Andover it is. I guess I should be more circumspect in my hints henceforth.

BTW, it is from Andover that the founder of Facebook graduated and also coincidentally the location of much of the filming of The Social Network (a film about the founding of Facebook) which was supposed to be at Harvard, as Harvard prohibits film studios.

over to you

4 minutes ....

That must be a record Gerard......

We stop over at Potsdam whenever we drive from the UK to Poland. Well worth a visit.

This is the Chinese House and is a 'garden pavilion' in Sanssouci Park ... which is full of these including a mock roman villa several palaces and a selection of other impressive pieces of masonry. This is the interior .... which you are not meant to photograph....

The people in the foreground taking their photos were Chinese.....and thought the whole thing highly amusing !

No idea what camera I used but I confess it was my pre-leica days and therefore a nikon...arrived just before the park closed at sunset..... which made the pavilion glow in a most impressive way....

Over to you....

Thank you, Thighslapper.

At home, I have a copy of a painting showing Frédéric II de Prusse playing his flute in his Music Salon of Sans-Souci. Never been there yet, but I remember having seen this lovely and funny building in a TV broadcast about this Emperor...

Where are we now ? and what building is it ?

Cheers

Gérard
