I seem to remember a thread where a guy tried to pull one of these off (without using the recommended hair dryer technic) and ended up pulling the Leica screen cover off with it...

I bought a 10 pack of the cheapies like these...

10 X SCREEN PROTECTOR for Leica M8 M8.2 - eBay (item 130283005068 end time Feb-20-09 19:38:25 PST)

I keep them tucked away in my camera bag... One can last me months... But once an edge snags and pulls up they need to be replaced...

100% Agree - I've tried many alternatives and none came close. My Invisible Shield has been on the M8 for two years and its still mint (unlike the camera)! I reckon its a wiser solution than the nonsensically expensive crystal glass upgrade!

I also have a Zagg on my Archos 605, a touch-screen PMP that gets heavy abuse daily, including travelling in my coat pocket otherwise unprotected. To date there isn't a mark on its screen and no corners are lifting. This is unique in my experience.

You may read that having to apply these screens wet is a problem - its not - just take the battery out of the M8 and follow Zagg's copious instructions to the letter.

As to the company - when I contacted them to say I'd messed up one screen by my own carelessness they quickly sent another for free (I didn't even have to pay postage between USA and Austria). To cap it all, the replacement came with a nice personal letter, signed by hand - that's service!

The zagg is the best I have found. Use it on my M8 , Iphone, Macbook. Works well in all applications.

I have also a Zagg protector but I will upgrade to the saphire crystal. I have seen the M8.2 and it is so much more clearer to see than through the Zagg film. If you do only use the LCD for setting menus, it is not important, but for viewing of images, it is no comparison.

Anyone have any experience with this polycarbonate screen protector?...

I have one on my 5D1. Thicker than a credit card. Offers good protection against mechanical impacts. Don't like much its silver trim though. I would not use thin plastic films on any expensive camera anyway.

I've used the ACMAXX for a year. It was easy to attach and I have not noted it since. So I would be happy recommending it. That said, I was not aware of the ZAGG at the time and they look good too.

Have on of these on every digital camera I own. Never any problem, even when removing - there is a 1mm strip of light adhesive around the perimeter of the protector and even without the hair dryer method it is super easy to remove.

For the M8 / M8.2 or M9 just get the generic 2.5" one. You will not have to pay the extra $$$ for the privilege of the protector being sold as "for Leica M8"..... They are identical.

Best,

Jan

Per P. and doubice, if either can reply, have you had any problem with the ACmaxx protector since your last posts?

I had the ACmaxx protectors on my M8 and M9 for over a year (or two). On both protectors, I had small spots that I assumed were some sort of nicks or abrasions although I couldn't feel them with a fingernail, so yesterday I decided to replace both with new protectors. I had no difficulties removing the old ones, but discovered the marks were actually some kind of hard deposits on the inside of the protectors (could feel them with a fingenail) that had somehow permantly marked the screens of both cameras. (deposits corresponded with marks on screens). I know I had cleaned and removed any dust from both screens and inside of the shields when I put them on. Does fungus leave a hard deposit ??? That's about the only thing I can think of but wouldn't think fungus would leave a hard deposit.

I haven't tried to contact ACmaxx, I saw posted somewhere that they don't respond to emails. Probally doesn't matter as their warranty only refunds the price of the shield.

I ended up putting a different brand of protector on the M9 (Giotto glass screen protector) that I had on hand, and am going to order another one for the M8, but I still have marked up screens on both cameras.

I'm really not happy that I started out with two perfect screens and had them screwed up by what I thought would protect them.

Usually the use of a hair dryer is what softens the glue of the LCD screen making it easy to pull off. An expensive repair, if at all possible. Use dental floss to cut the protector off and remove the rest of the adhesive by rubbing.

Glenn,

I just checked two M8's, a Digilux 2, Panasonic ZS7 and a Canon G7 with a lupe. Apart from abrasions that would have ended up on the LCD's had they not been protected with the ACMAXX, I see no damage.

Mind you - I am not ready to take the protectors off to find out what is lurking under them; I believe the loupe inspection was sufficient.

Cheers,

Jan

Thanks for the reply Jan,

On mine, I thought the marks were on the protector, only finding the damage after removing the protectors. I never used a loop however.

I hope you continue to have better luck than me. I can not understand how this happened unless it was some kind of reaction between the screen coating and the plastic of the protector, but am going to try the Giottos on both cameras for now.

As a bonus, the Giottos somehow seems to somewhat hide the marks on the screen.

Glenn
