Advertisement Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Hi starwatcher, Take a look here Who's going to by a M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted October 9, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 9, 2006 Sorry to vote no but i like neither the 0.68x viewfinder nor the 1.33x crop factor of the M8. I much prefer the 1:1 VF of the R-D1 or, at least, a 0.85x one although i don't quite like the 1.25x magnifier personally. Also i prefer full frame or the 1.5x crop factor of APS-C cameras which don't make me loose the 75mm FoV i'm fond of. Now i'm pretty sure that the M8 will be a fantastic camera in spite of ergonomic flaws that i could live with otherwise.
earleygallery Posted October 9, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2006 I'd buy one if I had the necessary £3K spare. But I don't But I'm happy using film
tobey bilek Posted October 9, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 9, 2006 Not unless I can be convinced It can pick up the full range of tones as I can with film. See my post above on highlights.
marknorton Posted October 9, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 9, 2006 I'm buying two and have just thrown caution to the wind and bought a Noctilux.

marknorton Posted October 9, 2006 Share #10 Posted October 9, 2006 Thanks Kent, I'm hoping so. It keeps on going up in price so I thought - now or never.

LCT, I'm surprised you are not going for one after all your contributions in the run-up to it being launched. Have you tried the camera? It was admittedly like preaching to the converted when I tried the camera at Photokina but I was instantly hooked.
lct Posted October 9, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 9, 2006 Hi Mark, I have never been quite happy with my Ms at the exception of the M3 to say the truth. The last mistake i made was to buy a gorgeous M6J that was deerer than the M8 if i remember well but it stayed on a shelf because i like shooting both eyes open and i don't feel comfortable with the 1.25x magnifier. 1:1 is definitely the VF magnification i need and i dislike the 1.33x crop factor as well. Then i decided to order a second R-D1 body (in fact a R-D1s) in case where the first one comes to fall apart.
marknorton Posted October 9, 2006 Share #13 Posted October 9, 2006 I'll be interested to know whether there's any difference between the R-D1s and an R-D1 running the new firmware. There was talk in the AP review about a new sensor but it wouldn't be the first time they've got it wrong, would it, Guy?
peterv Posted October 9, 2006 Share #14 Posted October 9, 2006 I'm buying. Allthough I never owned an M before. Peter

vic vic Posted October 9, 2006 Share #16 Posted October 9, 2006 me too .. i have to be convincied that the m8 can replace for me and my needs the provia 400 and the npz800 films (which i fruther push them)... im quite sure that at slower the m8 will be very good... but then.. leica is leica... i want to use the leice m8 as i use lieca now... if dont have that freedom - then i will simply not use that camera... and will not buy it of course... i would better buy in that case the mentioned noctilux which probably get more use :-)))))
jrc Posted October 9, 2006 Share #17 Posted October 9, 2006 I'm in. I've pre-ordered, and like Mark, just acquired a Noctilux. I'm going to work with the R-D1 and the M8 simultaneously, and if I like the M8 as much as I think I will, I'll probably trade in the R-D1 for a second M8. frc Posted October 9, 2006 Share #18 Posted October 9, 2006 A real digital camera for the price of only two and a half years of slide film cost. I'll get to see one in a Leica itroduction workshop next month, but, I've decided already. MP'll be for B&W use.
philipotto Posted October 9, 2006 Share #19 Posted October 9, 2006 I plan to purchase one second hand as soon as I can afford it. I don't have any M mount glass, but I have a friend that I can borrow a lens from, so I can start shooting as soon as I aquire the body. Quite simply the most beautiful digital camera ever. A camera that does more than simply produce good results, but a tool that will inspire and help the process rather than hinder it. My only reservation is carrying around such an expensive kit, as I will surely want it with me at all times. Perhaps a little electrical tape is in order. cornbarn Posted October 9, 2006 Share #20 Posted October 9, 2006 I'm tempted but need to handle one first because I'm worried about the .68x viewfinder.
