Advertisement Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Hi mboerma, Take a look here Oh Darn a line. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mboerma Posted October 7, 2008 Share #142 Posted October 7, 2008 Here's the answer to my question about the reprogramming: As for the repair of the pixels I can tell you that we do have a software for the sensor where the pixels can be reactivated. No, you will not loose pixels. So, nothing to worry about. Hmmm. Just keep an eye on it, I suppose. I think the software does the remap stuff and interpolates the dead pixels (and switches of/discards the hot ones).
wlaidlaw Posted October 7, 2008 Share #143 Posted October 7, 2008 I have sent an email to Sonja in Solms service asking them to check my camera for sensor lines while they have it in for the upgrade and repair of various electronic glitches. Mine is a very early M8, so I would not be surprised if it has some. I so rarely use 1250 and 2500, I might not have noticed. Wilson

No, you will not loose pixels. So, nothing to worry about. Just my understanding: if the pixels can be reactivated, OK; otherwise, they replace the sensor. The possibility to have such a software is even more attractive.
Shootist Posted October 9, 2008 Author Share #145 Posted October 9, 2008 Got my camera back yesterday. No line. Did some focusing tests and vertical alignment tests. Vertical alignment is now OFF, it was PERFECT when I sent it in. Even better then my chrome M8. Close focusing test show front focus, although with the vertical alignment being off it is hard to know exactly when you are really in focus at close distances (IE the image is always a little blurry). Adjusted the wheel to correct this and then it back focuses at distance. I'm done with Leica NJ except for major failures. Sending the camer to DAG sometime in November. Leica NJ need to give there employees EYE TESTS.
j_lir Posted October 9, 2008 Share #146 Posted October 9, 2008 The camera I sent back yesterday was NEW, a replacement Leica NJ sent me, on Friday 09/19/2008.I took 2 shots with it @ ISO 2500 with the old firmware just before I updated it to the V2 firmware. When looking at those 2 shot I took with firmware 1.201 I can see the line. I also took 2 shots of the exact same subject right after the firmware update and the line is in all of the shots, in the same place. But the line in those 4 images is not a blue line running to the bottom of the image. My subject was my book cases which are black and it was dark around them. The line that shows up in those images is a darker black line running from near the middle up to the top of the image. So it's not the new firmware that is doing this. I've all shot all the same subject with my chrome M8, after updating it to 2.0, and there is NO line anywhere in any images. Shootist I am in the exact same situation. However I had two M8's replaced in order to remedy my banding situation. When they showed up both exhibit banding, now they are going to be repaired. Such a pain in the arse! adan Posted October 10, 2008 Share #148 Posted October 10, 2008 On th flip side - I shot some extreme low-light last night at 320/640/1250/2500 just to get "samples" of the DARN LINE to show Leica so I could get the camera serviced.....and NO LINE! Gone! Invisible! Turned off all noise reduction, cranked up the gain ("exposure" in raw developing), cranked up the contrast and sharpening and everything - still no line... weird... Gone! Invisible! Turned off all noise reduction, cranked up the gain ("exposure" in raw developing), cranked up the contrast and sharpening and everything - still no line... weird... What helped me to detect the line was to have a scene with some lamps/lights in it. Put the ISO on 2500 ISO and the shutter at 1/8000 or 1/4000. Look for hot pixels when the photo is rendering (pixels burning in one color R,G or . If you see a pixels like that you'll probably see a line running from it. Work your way up with the shutter speed. That was the way I found the line and now I can detect both quite easily. A plug for the Solms Customer service: My camera will be pickup up today. I'm also having all the upgrades done, no need to wait for a spot in the queue they told me because the camera was malfunctioning. The pickup was arranged by Solms, free of charge. And I don't use express or fast service. They said they would have it returned to me before the end of October. Putting in upgrade options take 10 days according to them. wlaidlaw Posted October 10, 2008 Share #151 Posted October 10, 2008 Slightly less happy experience so far. The courier says my M8 arrived middle of last week for electronic glitches correction plus upgrades (LCD and frames). Nothing heard back so far, not even the usual pro-forma and it is not tracking on the service system. I checked with Leica UK just to be sure it was not because I did not have IE6, that I could not track it but they confirmed that they cannot track it either. I would have thought, perhaps simplistically, that any service item should be entered into the service tracking as soon as it arrives in Solms, so at least you have the comfort that it is in the queue. They don't seem to do this. Last year my 90/2.8 Elmarit-M, sent to Solms for coding, did not show up on the system until after they had lost it, found it and sent it back to me, still uncoded after 6 weeks. Fat lot of use that is! There are quite a few nice, competent and very helpful people in the Solms service department but I get the impression that the management and systems need a major overhaul. One time you get wonderful, exceptional service and the next time it stinks. Sadly it is human nature to remember the bad service long after the good service has faded into the mists of time. Eoin Posted October 10, 2008 Share #153 Posted October 10, 2008 Wilson, It seems to take more than a weeks before items appear on the system. You know Andrea Frankel from your previous contacts with Solms, I'd suggest dropping her a line. She's out until the 13th but if any one gets things moving it's Andrea. Chris, Andrea was forwarded my last mail and she took up my cause. I never got a chance to discuss my issues with anyone... but let's just say I'm very happy and surprised at the corrective action proposed in my case.
