Overgaard Posted September 11, 2008 Share #161 Posted September 11, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thus, as you suspected, f/0.95 isn't enough different from f/1.0 to make any exposure difference Perhaps slightly over-exposed :-))) ho ho No, have a look at this article about fast lenses. R2-D2 Posted September 11, 2008 Share #162 Posted September 11, 2008 Is f0.95 the next open stop in the logarithmic f-stop scale? Is there any appreciable difference between 1.0 and 0.95? f/0.95 is 0.148 stops faster than f/1.0.
mym6is12 Posted September 11, 2008 Share #163 Posted September 11, 2008 f/0.95 is 0.148 stops faster than f/1.0. Who will win the 'T' number stakes between the Noctilux f/1, f/0.95 and Canon EOS f/1 , RF f/0.95 - for the title of the fastest lens ?
luigi bertolotti Posted September 11, 2008 Share #164 Posted September 11, 2008 Same sensor i would bet not. To be precise... I meant "same sensor size"... or even some APS format, but if exactly 18x27 I think could be reagarded really as a dCL...

cbretteville Posted September 12, 2008 Share #166 Posted September 12, 2008 Hi there guys I am newcomer! I am looking for a Noctilux 50/1 in Melbourne and according to a reputable camera shop here, was told it is going obsolete and not available, but not knowing why? Could that be the secret of a new 50/0.95 soon. They do have a special edition of the 50/1 for about 2 1/2 the price of the old. Is it worth getting it, I am looking at it..drooling ! MYMY:( First of all, welcome! As far as we know the glass in the f1.0 nocti was all made in Canada when Leica had a factory there. That has closed and the stores of lens elements used up over the years. Leica didn't want to give up on the Noctilux name so they designed a new lens that is probably better corrected and 'cheaper' to produce than restarting production of the old lens would be. If you desire a Nocti you should be able to find one second hand in mint/mint- condition. They pop up for sale all the time - unless you want to wait for the new one. Yes, the humidored Nocti looks really nice in its box, but the cost is, IMHO, stupid money. Be aware that a Nocti isn't for everyone. I've tried it and find it extremely hard to focus at f1. II'm happy with my 50 Summilux pre ASPH for now. - Carl
jaapv Posted September 12, 2008 Share #167 Posted September 12, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) There's another view - in the UK, the M8 is currently available at 27% below its retail price. Maintain that price for the M8 and keep the M8.2 at full retail plus and watch demand. Now the future for the M8 is mapped for a few years and the new lenses provide a more practical system, confidence will grow and in turn sales volumes. 27% discount is valuable and fine for a second/backup camera. Both take the same picture and if you don't shoot weddings maybe the M8 is all you need. As an ex-manufacturing man I cannot see Leica adding value to existing stock for disposal whilst there's still a market there, even a growing one. It'll cost a substantial percentage of their cost to strip, re-build re-box and supervise. In material, labour and factory overhead the M8 may only cost £1,000 so until the choice is scrap or re-work it'll be in the renown slow moving product range. As previous today, this strategy will provide a 3 tier market with lower cost of entry, long term stability and protect existing owners second-hand values: M8.2 M8 Used Drop the M8 today and existing users can't easily trade up as the M8 will become undesirable. Leica will look after its customers, not with handouts and free upgrades, but by maintaining their asset value (within a digital world). Those of us who bought in the last few months should have enjoyed lower prices, directly, or through the part exchange scheme. So no complaints from them, methinks. All IMO. Rolo Hm, I gues the cost of the parts, even at bulk buyibg, is well beyond 1000 GBP, that would just cover the sensor and motherboard..
Rolo Posted September 12, 2008 Share #168 Posted September 12, 2008 Hm, I gues the cost of the parts, even at bulk buyibg, is well beyond 1000 GBP, that would just cover the sensor and motherboard.. Jaap, Let's start by saying that neither of us know the truth, or have experience in buying digital camera gear. OK ? I thought £1,000 was over-generous for materials, labour and factory overhead and truly believe that it's nearer £500, but that matters little. Design, inventory and distribution costs will add substantially to those costs and we all know that a box of Cornflakes costs far more to distribute than the box contents. Every other manufacturer offers really low cost products that contain the same parts and have similar distribution costs as the M8. Canon happily sell the 5D for less than £1,000 and a G9 for less than £250 - maybe those product cost £300 and £90 respectively. However, the debate was not about cost, but whether Leica would re-work their stock, using their scarce labour resource which is busily building two new cameras including one new system, and raising the cost by adding new parts as well ? We could both be wrong and they'll scrap the lot - but I think not. Easier to leave it in the catalogue ad infinitum and protect the existing owners and the Brand Values. Hope I'm right. zapp Posted September 12, 2008 Share #169 Posted September 12, 2008 f/0.95 is 0.148 stops faster than f/1.0. But only 0.182 stops slower than a lens 1/3 faster than 1.0. Assuming that 1/3 of a full stop makes a visible difference in exposure. Who cares about the amount of light in the days of high iso - the zero point whatever is the key selling point making it the fastest 35 mm lens in serial production ever (besides the Canon 0.95/50). And a 0.7 or 0.9 lens will require a serious increase is front diameter not appreciable for a rangefinder camera.
stunsworth Posted September 12, 2008 Share #170 Posted September 12, 2008 It's all about willy waving. In practice f1 or f.95 will make no difference what so ever. It's about having a lens that's faster than f1. A line in the sand. Plus, what's important isn't that it's f1 or f.95, but how it performs at that aperture. As has been mentioned on the LUG Leica aren't the first company to offer a 21mm f1.4 lens, the question is how much better than the opposition it will be. Guest darkstar2004 Posted September 12, 2008 Share #173 Posted September 12, 2008 Another story about the "new & improved" Noctilux that is about to burst upon the scene: Have a burning desire to take photos by candlelight? Have $11,000 handy? It looks like Leica will be able to oblige before long with the impending release of their Noctilux 50mm f/0.95. A French photography publication leaked details this week about the lens, which is scheduled for announcement at Photokina in two weeks. dezyme Posted September 12, 2008 Share #174 Posted September 12, 2008 With a rough comparison, it looks like the asph-noct might protrude further into the viewfinder...but it sure is purty. andybarton Posted September 12, 2008 Share #177 Posted September 12, 2008 Are we sure that these rumour links aren't just recycling the same rumour? The M8.2 is not going to be the really hot news at Photokina. It's a "no brainer". Leica have something much more interesting for us, I'm sure. ho_co Posted September 12, 2008 Share #178 Posted September 12, 2008 Note that new Noctilux does not have engraving of actual focal length. But boy, it's a much snazzier looking lens than the non-ASPH one, isn't it? Note that the 50/1.0 is shown at a higher magnification than the f/0.95--compare the widths of the two imaged mounts in http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/63007-noctilux-f-0-95-asph-promotion-9.html#post653161. You can only compare them generally as illustrated.
Iron Flatline Posted September 12, 2008 Share #179 Posted September 12, 2008 Are we sure that these rumour links aren't just recycling the same rumour? I actually assume that's exactly what it is. The M8.2 is not going to be the really hot news at Photokina. It's a "no brainer". Leica have something much more interesting for us, I'm sure. My Goodness, I sure hope so. If all they managed was some small improvements to the M8 and a few new lenses, then I really worry about the company.
ho_co Posted September 12, 2008 Share #180 Posted September 12, 2008 Leica M8.2 und neue Objektive | photoscala When I check out links like this, I tend to check the prices listed, and nod approvingly when I see it's what has previously been quoted. Isn't it wonderful how these prices that at first shocked us now present themselves as what we expected? Herr Dr Kaufmann has done the pre-publicity beautifully! {Probably tipped Rubén personally. )
