Lost picture from SD card, any Rescue possible?

Dear all,

 

I use basically Canon system (1DS II, 1D II etc) but sometimes I use Leica R8/R9+DMR. I don't have much experience of this system.

 

Everytime I switch the camera on, the camera asks if I want to Format the SD card while it has already been formatted and has taken some pictures.

 

Today by mistake I chose the option - Yes for format and I of course lost the pictures.

 

Is there any software or so that enables to rescue the deleted pictures?

Yes! As long as you don't use the card for anything else before recovery.

 

I use this to recover audio and it's always worked for me. Should work for jpg too:

When you open it, in the settings, choose an intensive scan (the slower one) and increase the maximum recovered file size to something north of your image size (think it's 15MB by default).

Many thanks but after formating, I took some picturers. Did not know I shouldn't take pictures after that.

Still worth trying - you'll only lose the photos that have been written over. If you had 100 pics, for example, and took 10 after formatting, you've still a good chance of recovering 90 images..

I have used PhotoRescue in similar circumstances and it worked great.

I downloaded trail version of Photo Rescue Wizard, it seemed it worked but at last when I click in Next to save the rescued pictures, it suggests me to register/buy their product.

 

Any idea how to solve the problem without purchasing?

It's only 29 dollars...do yourself a favor and buy a liscense. You'll have it in the mail within minutes.

I remember getting a free copy of PhotoRescue with a Sandisk SD card a while ago although I don't know if Sandisk is still offering this deal but it might be worth checking out if you're considering buying an extra SD card.

Oh, BTW, I used PhotoRescue recently too and it worked very well and even unexpectedly returned some images taken 12 months previously although any that had been overwritten during more recent shoots were not retrievable.

Wow. Sounds like the old days when you had to call out the AA or RAC when your temperamental Italian job gave up.

 

May I suggest investing in a Leicaflex SL and good old-fashioned film (horror of horrors - Kodachrome!)

Film is just as susceptible but in different ways; I clearly remember on one occasion shooting a roll of film without any film in the camera and, on other, forgetting that I had an exposed roll in the camera and opening the back to put a new one in. (We normally only do it once though! )

 

At least with flash memory cards the images may be retrievable but with film they were gone forever.

Thanks you all. I did use PCINSPECTOR and the pictures are rescued but pity I can not open any of them though I can see the thumbnails. When I try to open it using PSCS3, I get message - Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered.

 

Can somebody please let me know how to solve this problem?

This is Repost as I did not get answer of my last part of the questions, may be freinds did not notice I have put more info on the thread.

 

I basically use Canon and sometimes Leica DMR with R8/R9. I am not much familiar with DMR.

 

I have a few questions as below and would be grateful for your answers-

 

1. Everytime when I switch on, my R9+DMR asks - do you want to format the card while the card has already been formatted and have taken some pictures. If I choose "no", the camera doesn't fire. Can you tell me why is that?

 

2. I accidently formatted the card while it had pictures and I lost them. I used rescue software -"pcinspector data recovery" and apparantly the pictures are rescued as I can see the thumb nails but when I try to open them using PSCS3, I get message - "Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of- file was encountered". Any suggestion how to get the pictures back?

 

3. Needless to say, the focusing area in R9/R8+DMR is too narrow, any way to widen it using extra focusing screen or so?

Can't help you on retrieving your files, but check out Brightscreen's "Eyepiece Magnifier" for your focusing issues. Brightscreen Eyepiece Magnifier I've used one in the past and just ordered my own. Might fine accessory.

I'll second troy's view on the Brightscreen VF magnifier. It's made a big difference to my focussing.

 

AS for your SD card problems, are you mixing the cards up from one camera to another. The DMR will only work with DMR formatted cards. Other than that, I'd email Leica at Solms.

Is the software that you are using to recover the file shareware? If so, have you paid the fee? It could be that it only recovers the thumbnail in "demo" mode.

 

I have the R8/DMR combination, and I find the guideline in the viewfinder very useful for framing purposes. It gives you that lauded "M viewfinder and incoming elements" advantage, while being able to take advantage of the SLR format.

 

If you not are mixing your SD cards, then it sounds like a firmware glitch, or even a hardware/pin problem. What firmware are you using?

Recovery of SD cards is usually rather effective with the available types of software. But as Bill mentions, not before you buy the software will it work properly.

 

There's a few that offer to recover 1, 2 or 3 files as a sample, but I forgot which.

 

When done, I would format the card on a Mac, using disk utility and make sure it is written all over (choose that feature in security level).

 

Then when the camera get the card again, it might require to format it itself. But then that should be it. If it continues to require to format it every time, try another card, or call Solms.
