mori335 Posted March 1, 2016 Share #584 Posted March 1, 2016 I have a quick question regarding the M2 film advance. Recently got my M2 back from a CLA from DAG. Went to turn the shutter dial and it wouldn't budge. Realized the film advance lever was in physical contact with the shutter dial. Pulling the lever out a bit and the dial was free. Called Don about it and he said it was common on M2's and he has even had ones with dented shutter speed dials. I don't doubt Don as he is the only guy I've trusted with my Leicas, but never heard anyone mention it here. Is it just one of those quirks with these older cameras? My MP doesn't do it (still relatively new although made in 2002. Bought it used last year). The M3 I had long ago didn't do it. It has been an absolute joy shooting this thing and results have been outstanding. Clutter free viewfinder and my sunny 16 has been surprisingly on. Just wondering. michaelwj Posted March 3, 2016 Share #586 Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) .....I guess not. man, my first post and I killed an international thread. I should stick to lurking.... Don't feel too bad. I do it al the time . Also, sometimes thing take a while to kick over here - it can be slow for a week or two, then buzz very quickly. But to your question, yes, I've noticed it on a few different Ms with the solid advance lever. And I've used one where the shutter dial was worn from the advance lever - dented like you said. I usually hold the camera with my thumb under the advance lever anyway, which keeps it off the shutter speed dial. But... although I prefer the aesthetics of the solid advance lever, I prefer the ergonomics of the two piece M4 advance, it never comes in contact with the shutter dial, and I find it easier to use. mori335 Posted March 4, 2016 Share #587 Posted March 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks Michael. I too like to keep my thumb between th body and lever for quick advance. My first Leica is a M6, bought new in '95. The plastic on the film advance worried me, as did the angled rewind crank, but being Leica, they never failed. My preference is the full metal film advance and the straight post rewind. This M2 is a gem of a camera. Permanent part of the stable.

pico Posted April 26, 2016 Share #592 Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) ...or best offer :-) I always wonder what sort of offer would be acceptable, because the initial asking price is so out of this world! Well, I tried that. $2350 USD. It was refused. What a surprise. I am not a big eBay buyer, but I have found that most of my offers were accepted. Try it. It might work, but not for the case above. The guy must be on crack or something. Edited April 26, 2016 by pico
menos I M6 Posted April 27, 2016 Share #593 Posted April 27, 2016 Well, I tried that. $2350 USD. It was refused. What a surprise. I am not a big eBay buyer, but I have found that most of my offers were accepted. Try it. It might work, but not for the case above. The guy must be on crack or something. If the camera indeed is what the seller claims, it is a rare collectors item. Similarly rare black paint MP cameras (the original, M3 based MP) have been sold in the range the seller placed his asking price. These things really have no reasonable price and are sold at what a potential collector is prepared to pay for it. There are people who buy these as assets and there are people who fall in love with these and just buy them because they can. Normal people can simply go out and buy one of the beautifully done repaint jobs, which look as pretty, wear as pretty but will of course not appreciate in value as these original items. A beautifully repainted M2 - either custom made or a replica of the Black Paint M2 can easily be bought for the offer you made to the seller - which he rightly refused ;-)
Guest Posted April 27, 2016 Share #594 Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) Maybe for a little more of half of that, after a propper paintjob, sometimes even after a recent CLA? It matters, if you buy it from the one, who got bored with this experiment, or from the dealer, where he traded it in. pico Posted April 27, 2016 Share #596 Posted April 27, 2016 If the camera indeed is what the seller claims, it is a rare collectors item. It can't be. I have one of the first black M2s in very good condition. I never have such luck. .

Before you put it on eBay and buy yourself a beautifully repainted M2 and a new car for the money please post a few nice pictures of the camera here. pico Posted April 27, 2016 Share #600 Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) I don't know why the gloss doesn't show up as it does in real life. Maybe the overhead shade was too diffuse. It was between rains. Front view. Top view. I'll try again on a clear day. Maybe it is a re-paint? . Edited April 27, 2016 by pico
