costa43 Posted Sunday at 02:03 PM Share #1 Posted Sunday at 02:03 PM (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all I wear my M11-P with official thumb rest across my body on a strap. I’ve noticed on a number of garments that in the area where the camera sits on my body, my clothing has faded or even torn. The thumb rest has some sharp edges, as does the screen edge but before I look for a fix I thought I would see if anyone else has noticed this? I have no other accessories on the camera besides a basic rope strap and the official thumb rest. Edited Sunday at 02:04 PM by costa43

pgh Posted Sunday at 02:39 PM Share #2 Posted Sunday at 02:39 PM No, but I could see it happening easily with a protruding piece of metal. At any rate, it's part of the charm, if you choose to look at it that way. Wabi Sabi.
kkochheiser Posted Sunday at 02:57 PM Share #3 Posted Sunday at 02:57 PM I also wear mine cross body but do not use an accessory thumb rest and have not seen any problem, so far. Kent
charlesphoto99 Posted Sunday at 03:25 PM Share #4 Posted Sunday at 03:25 PM Nobody needs a thumb rest. I tried, and it was just another thing to get snagged. Everyone clamors for more compact bodies, and then some go and put thumb rests, half cases, Visoflexes, etc on it, thereby negating that sleek compactness that is the M.

costa43 Posted Sunday at 06:23 PM Author Share #9 Posted Sunday at 06:23 PM (edited) Thanks all. I think it must be the thumb rest. It’s the first M body that I’ve used one with and the first time this issue has become apparent. I’ll stop using it before I run out of clothes! To be clear for others that may consider the thumb grip, it’s not the protruding part that is sharp. It’s the squared off bit near the hot shoe. costa43 Posted yesterday at 01:37 PM Author Share #11 Posted yesterday at 01:37 PM It looks nicer without it I agree but I actually find the thumb rest helpful for hand holding at lower speeds, my t-shirts are disagreeing with me though.

I have no other accessories on the camera besides a basic rope strap and the official thumb rest. I have the same problem - but I couldn't care less. I love the thumb rest and it's on all my M cameras, especially when I use heavier and larger lenses such as the Noctilux 75/1.25 or the APO 135/3.4. I even add the handgrip sometimes, it makes such a difference in balancing the camera and handholding longer shutter speeds. The clothes can be replaced easily, not so the shots. As for the design I prefer the look of my M cameras with thumb rest applied but that's a very subjective view... By the way if I use small lenses on the M the weight is so little that this causes no problem to my clothes at all except if I wear for example something with metal on my shirt (i.e. shirt buttons made of metal) 1
250swb Posted yesterday at 05:18 PM Share #13 Posted yesterday at 05:18 PM Good question, efficient photography or sartorial elegance, what a choice to have to make. Of course this has always been a problem, a neck strap bobbles up the collar of a shirt, or the film advance lever put a pull in a sweater. But I've never thought of photographers as being well dressed, they are usually thinking about other things, but wearing practical, comfortable and tougher clothes that don't show wear is an idea, something like a safari suit maybe? But oh the potential irony, a Leica camera literally trashing a Gucci shirt, the battle of the luxury brands!
Olaf_ZG Posted yesterday at 06:58 PM Share #14 Posted yesterday at 06:58 PM This will be a new trend… next to a brassed camera, also clothing should be brassed.

Actually, i added a grip with arca though.. since i want to protect the bottom and i use it for landscape too.. the stability is a bonus
odoomi Posted 14 hours ago Share #16 Posted 14 hours ago … habe the same problem: my GoreTex Jacket is heavily scraped garnment. I do not think however that the handle is the bad guy causing this but the sharp edges around the display, maybe even the glassy screen protector I put on top of it…. I can't really use the standard black chrome / paint cameras comfortably without a thumb rest. The gloss black body I'm using at the moment is fine because I seem to be able to grip it more but those duller coatings just slide right out of my fingers for some reason. I was also thinking it could be this but I've never had this issue with my M10R and the only difference between that body and my M11P is the thumb grip I use so I thought it must be the sharp parts around the hotshoe mount.
kkochheiser Posted 1 hour ago Share #19 Posted 1 hour ago You could try the Match Technical Thumbs Up. It doesn’t seem to have sharp edges?
