Leica M EV1: The first M with EVF instead of Rangefinder

It’s an intriguing camera, I see a lot of virtues in the design. It’s sort of a Q with interchangeable lenses.. I wonder when it will be available here in the US?…

However, I got the X2Dii mainly for use with excellent AF lenses which cost from $1500 to $3700. The IBIS alone sets this camera apart. The body costs $1700 less than the new EV1 and the feature set is phenomenal.

The ibis on the X2DII is nothing short of phenomenal. I was in Watkins Glen, NY (USA) and was on a hike with multiple waterfalls. I hand held every shot with a slow shutter speed (1/10-1/15) and it was tack sharp on the computer at 100% while showing the flowing water beautifully. I absolutely love my M but it is not  possible to hold the M reliably still at that speed. I also am in the SL system which has the benefit of ibis but using a MF (M) lens when you can ONLY use EVF focusing is no substitute for an M...

On the M-EV1 you can ONLY use EVF focusing…

Don't think they can. Without FCC approval they cannot import electronics that need that approval.

Based on the interview and comments, I do not think Leica has high expectations for M-EV1. They are more cautiously optimistic. Unlike with Q, the R&D expense was kept to an absolute minimum, and they are prepared to jettison the whole project if it does not sell. The camera seems to have been launched in response to customer demand, not because Leica was persuaded it was the way to go.

If it weren't for Leica cameras, the X2D II (with all its issues) would be my clear favorite. But we have a separate thread to discuss that

IBIS really makes a massive difference, I know I can do 1/3 tack sharp with a 35mm lens on my A7C II, and the ibis on the Hasselblad is supposed to be a bit better.

I have read a good number of reports and posts now about the EV1.

What is unclear to me is the reason to buy it. I have read that it may be aimed at two types of customer -

1. M-users with deteriorating eyesight.

Surely easier and much cheaper to buy an Visoflex for your existing camera. The other alternative of course is a Q - it's AF would be an advantage I bet to many users in this unfortunate position.

2. New users who love the 'M' for its looks an image or heritage but are intimidated by, or do not like the RF.

I am not sure if this type of potential customer would want to manually focus on an EVF as they may well be used to an AF camera. A Q would make sense in this situation.

I have an M and a Q but just cannot see who would buy this.

You can still focus with the scale on the lens.

Leica has mentioned that the M-EV1 was launched in response to customer demand (LUF and LSI). The reasons why people buy it have been mentioned several times in this forum, but the flurry of activity will make it hard to find them.

And doers it use the same battery as the M11-P ?

But are you not squarely in the number 1 target audience of old timers? Same as the person with the 1953 name. I see mostly 70+ year olds defending the camera and its half hearted execution.

Unlikely about the profiles but can't confirm.
