ChrisC Posted October 29, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Graeme - You make a compelling case for the 40mm F2.0 and I've come to the conclusion that it would suit most of my work. So I'd love one, at a sensible UK price; but where the hell have all those 40mm Summicrons gone? Is someone hoarding them in the vain hope that another 40- frameline Leica is released so they can make a killing? Well I doubt that - but it seems odd that these lenses don't seem to be available at the moment. ............... Chris

epand56 Posted October 29, 2009 Share #22 Posted October 29, 2009 but where the hell have all those 40mm Summicrons gone? Is someone hoarding them in the vain hope that another 40- frameline Leica is released so they can make a killing? Graeme made too much valuable advertising on this lens with his pictures... Maybe that's why they have been sold like bread... But I'm sure that you will find one if you really want it.

ChrisC Posted October 30, 2009 Share #26 Posted October 30, 2009 ..... 5 of them on eBay right now.... Lct - Thanks, but the only time I bought across borders I got stuck for UK import Duty, VAT, and storage ransom for the privilege of paying Import Duty and VAT. I'd prefer to buy in the UK to avoid the chance of that happening again as cross-border purchasing can turn out expensive. Thanks for the consideration though. ............... graeme_hutton Posted October 30, 2009 Author Share #27 Posted October 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) 40 'cron gets recognition for the superb lens/value for money on the M8 at last!!. To be honest I didn't own an M8 when I saw the lens on ebay a couple of years back for £180 but took the plunge as I was so surprised at getting a Leica lens so cheaply. A reasonable deal on the body made the overall combination affordable so I'm not grimacing now at the resale value since introduction of the M9. The M8 40'cron is all the camera I'll ever need. Waaaayy better than my amature efforts. Best G

I'd prefer to buy in the UK to avoid the chance of that happening again as cross-border purchasing can turn out expensive. Thanks for the consideration though.... I do it all the time so it's not a problem for me. Suffice it to add VAT and customs duty to the price and compare. Anyway, one of the five 40/2 comes from Madrid if memory serves. If you live in UK you won't pay VAT or customs duty on it, just shipping and insurance if any.

Frank Black Posted June 20, 2010 Share #34 Posted June 20, 2010 "PS, I was moved to acquire the 40 Summicron by the lovely image quality of Graeme's posts, & I thank him very much for his example!" Undeserved, but thank you for that! Best Graeme Well Also the same with me... After reading all over the web, and specially the photographs from Graeme and his words, reading Erwin Puts en Ken Rockwell i went for one Got if for 250 us dollars, in mint condition, with rubber hood en back side cover, goin to gave to look for front cover It focus good, have to test it some more, It focus, even a widest aperture, Frame lines its not a problem for me, Not sure if its wise, but have no intention or using a filter, i intend to use it for bw... Later, after testing it some more i will leave more words of hands on experience... Like the Bokeh, but thats personal taste
Perceval Posted September 15, 2010 Share #35 Posted September 15, 2010 I've got a 40mm Minolta M-Rokkor-QF which seems to take quite nice pictures. Where does this fit in a range of M-Leica 40mm lenses?
lct Posted September 15, 2010 Share #36 Posted September 15, 2010 I've got a 40mm Minolta M-Rokkor-QF which seems to take quite nice pictures. Where does this fit in a range of M-Leica 40mm lenses? Very close to the Summicron-C 40/2. Color rendition looks a bit more yellowish than the latter's.
WestMichigan Posted September 21, 2010 Share #37 Posted September 21, 2010 Well, the 'scarcity' of the 40mm C mount Summicron might have something to do with it receiving a 'spectacular' review on Steve Huff's website. I've been lightly monitoring the C mount lenses and cameras for awhile now in anticipation of eventually getting my M8 and roughly coinciding with Steve's review of the Cl and the Summicron C (love letter might describe it better!) the offerings from eBay Dealers and Individuals shifted a bit. It might have been natural market variability, but 'mint' CL kits and 'mint' lens offerings ticked way up from the dealers - implying the release of stuff they were sitting on waiting for something like Steve's Review to boost the market! Also the listings from individuals seemed to tick downward - maybe from folks rethinking having put there CL's, CLE's, or C lenses aside? Best idea, be patient and keep shopping - The eBay Gods Giveth & They Taketh Equally Over Time - The Deal you need will eventually show itself. I picked up my EOS 20D for a 100 bucks by being both diligent and patient. Richard in Michigan Graeme - You make a compelling case for the 40mm F2.0 and I've come to the conclusion that it would suit most of my work. So I'd love one, at a sensible UK price; but where the hell have all those 40mm Summicrons gone? epand56 Posted September 22, 2010 Share #38 Posted September 22, 2010 I would never part from my Summicron-C 40/2, it is one of the lenses that gives me the best results. I was lucky enough to buy one on eBay at less than 200 euros a year and a half ago. After that I've seen no more of them selling around. And must say that the combo M8 + Summicron-C 40 + Elmar-C 90 is one of my favourites when travelling. They both are stunning glasses, very small, light and sharp. kanzlr Posted September 22, 2010 Share #39 Posted September 22, 2010 mhm, just get the Rokkor. It seems to be basically the same lens. I filed off the mount on mine to show 35mm frame lines and it is my most used lens by far on the M8.
bboynic Posted September 23, 2010 Share #40 Posted September 23, 2010 Hi, i have a 40mm F2 Summicron-c and my Leica M8 is on the way now. I am just wondering which 39mm UV/IR cut filter are you guys using? can you guys show some pictures with the lens and the 39mm UV/IR cut filter on? Is the B+W SCHNEIDER 486 39mm UV IR CUT FILTER will fits on the 40mm Summicron-c? Can anyone also suggest me a lens cap for the 40mm Summicron-c? Thank you.
