NightPix Posted July 14 Share #1 Posted July 14 Advertisement (gone after registration) I love the Q series cameras but I’ve never liked the cap that Leica provides that fits over the hood. I finally bought a rubber hood cap that’s tethered to the strap lug - it does the job but it’s ugly. I’m curious as to how most folks deal with protecting the lens on their Q: do you use the Leica hood cap? do you leave the hood on and the lens cap at home? do you take the hood off and use a cap directly on the lens? do you use a UV filter to protect the lens? etc etc…
Advertisement Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Hi NightPix, Take a look here Do you use a lens cap on your Q3 or Q3 43?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Foto Pixx Posted July 14 Share #2 Posted July 14 I have a good quality UV filter on the lens plus the Leica lens hood. I never have to perform that extra step to take a photo. I'm not worried about wiping the filter with a soft shirt or bandana, which I wouldn't do to the lens, and I haven't had a smudge on the filter yet, just occasional "dust." Rick in CO Posted July 15 Share #3 Posted July 15 I bought the Thumbs Up rubber hood for when the camera is in the bag. Walking around its off and I count on the lens hood to protect the glass.
Tarekith Posted July 15 Share #4 Posted July 15 (edited) I use a snap on lens cap from Bioluminous for my Q43, I don’t like the stock lens cap either. Works great with the stock hood, and nice and slim so I can keep it in my back pocket like I do with all my Sony caps. More secure than I expected too. Im thinking about checking one of these out next: https://otect.co/products/q-cap-v2-for-leica-q-q-p-q2-q2-monochrom Edited July 15 by Tarekith
BruceRH Posted July 15 Share #5 Posted July 15 I bought a cheap, slim vented hood with threads and then a high quality B&W Master UV filter.
SrMi Posted July 15 Share #6 Posted July 15 I like OTect Q-Caps.

Walking around its off and I count on the lens hood to protect the glass. This is also what I do.. I don't tether it to the camera and just leave it in the bag when using the camera. FWIW, the Thumbs Up cap works on the Q43 with stock hood (which is shorter than the Q3 hood) as it actually "locks" into place by means of a thin rubber ridge onto the small gap between the hood and the lens (although you can push it all the way to the aperture ring on both cameras if you try). JNK100 Posted July 15 Share #8 Posted July 15 I use the Red Dot camera 3d-printed lens cap.
Smogg Posted July 15 Share #9 Posted July 15 I never use caps on my cameras, the protection provided by the lens hood is enough for me.
hoolyproductions Posted July 15 Share #10 Posted July 15 I really like the metal lens cap on the Q cameras - I guess it is a matter of taste. I put mine in a pocket when I start a shooting session and leave it off until I am done - as posted above IMO the hood is fine to protect the camera during a shooting session if I am being careful.

This is exactly what I do. I just like the metal cap and trust the lenshood. No need for the cap in my bag too.
Ivan M Posted July 15 Share #12 Posted July 15 Once i am out shooting mine stays in my BAG, My lens HOOD IS ALWAYS ON no matter what! I only put my lens cap back on when i am done shooting for the day.
NightPix Posted July 15 Author Share #13 Posted July 15 Thanks to all for the much appreciated input! I've ordered the Otect hood cap to keep on the camera when it's in transit in a bag (that seems to be when the lens picks up the most dust). The ugly rubber cap is now in the bin.
Olaf_ZG Posted July 15 Share #14 Posted July 15 Never a cap, but always the hood. For all my cameras as long as the lens is mounted on the camera.

bobtodrick Posted July 15 Share #16 Posted July 15 As others…B+W UV filter plus hood. Couldn’t tell you where the lens cap is if my life depended on it 😂
Phil75 Posted July 15 Share #17 Posted July 15 Leica or B+W UV filter + cap but never a lens hood on all my cameras / lenses. I prefer the smaller package.
trix4ever Posted July 15 Share #18 Posted July 15 UV plus hood, cap never left the box.
beewee Posted July 16 Share #19 Posted July 16 I’ve been using the Otect hood cap on the Q3 since day one and never looked back. The fit is perfect. I wish Leica would just buy Otect and have them make it the stock cap.
Mikep996 Posted July 16 Share #20 Posted July 16 OEM hood. OEM lens cap on when camera not in use. When out shooting, only OEM hood, no lens cap or "protective" filter.
