dscdsc Posted March 4 Share #1 Posted March 4 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Two ways I attached an Airtag to my M11-D. One requires modification and the other does not. I 3D printed the housings and added screws that thread into the tripod socket. Welcome, dear visitor! dscdsc Posted March 4 Author Share #3 Posted March 4 Here is the modified airtag. It's lower profile and spans the entire bottom. However it is a decent amount of work to modify the airtag. you need to remove it from the case and then solder on leads to the battery contacts. Welcome, dear visitor! mattro Posted March 6 Share #6 Posted March 6 Are you able to share the files, so we can print them too? The non-hacking-an-airtag-to-bits option looks pretty clunky - how does it feel to use?

You just can stand the camera up on the base. In the hands it is not noticeable.
Robert Blanko Posted March 7 Share #8 Posted March 7 I would love to see Leica implementing a native built-in AirTag in their cameras. As far as I understand, this is Bluetooth-based and a respective app could provide said functionality - provided that Leica and Apple would be willing to agree on such implementation. But for an almost 10k€ camera this should not make much difference regarding the price. I recently bought a set of 4 AirTags for less than 100€.
LocalHero1953 Posted March 8 Share #9 Posted March 8 (edited) I have also just bought 4 AirTags but I am slightly puzzled about their best usage. I can set up Find My so that I am notified when the AirTag has been separated from me, but only when it has gone about 50-100m away. If a thief has taken it, then he has a good head start on me before I even think about chasing. Their best use case seems to be for being left behind or lost, rather than as theft prevention. And for me, whose camera is either in my hands or in a bag, never put down on its own, I should probably put the AirTag in the camera bag, not attach it to the camera. Even so, if I’ve left it on a train, and if I only get notified after I’m 50m away, the train has probably departed (but at least I’ll see which station it ends up in). I will certainly use the AirTags, but I wish they worked to tell me when they are more than a short distance away, like back on the cafe table I’ve just got up from. I’m a newbie to AirTags, so perhaps I’m misunderstanding something. Edited March 8 by LocalHero1953

This was because of a historic snow storm in Munich. We had multiple canceled flights, one while we were at the gate. It took almost two months to get our bags back. I don't think I would have got them back if I did not have the AirTags in them. I was able to keep telling them where the bags were because of the AirTags. I think I would have given up if I did not know where they were.

Stef63 Posted March 8 Share #13 Posted March 8 I’m curious about the purpose of attaching an AirTag to a camera, considering how easily it can be removed. I’d love to understand the intended use case.
RobW0 Posted March 8 Share #14 Posted March 8 The AirTag will not always give and instantaneous location. It needs to be near an iPhone or iPad or such that can share its location to the iCloud. If something is left behind the odds are good that someone will come with in range of it, to transmit its location, at some point. There is a small company making a grip for the Q2 & Q3 (and soon M11) that has a slot to hold an AirTag. The grip uses an anti-theft screw to hold it on. That said the grip is expensive and a bit more bulky that other grips on the market.
Photoworks Posted March 9 Share #15 Posted March 9 By design, you need an iPhone to transmit the signal. If you robber uses an android phone you still need to wait for someone to come by with an iPhone that has BT active. would it not be better to use something for IOS/Android at the same time? https://a.co/d/0DYJMqV Apple is not live tracking anyway, it can take 5/10 hours before a new signal gets sent out. For my dog I use tractive GPS, it keeps track with real GPS, and transmits the signal with eSim. but the battery needs to be charged every few days. I just have Insurance for my camera and don't worry so much.
RQ44 Posted March 9 Share #16 Posted March 9 (edited) Leica like most brands, do not want you to recover your beloved camera. It is in their best interest to not support air tags be it electronically or physically in accessories. One stolen or lost M11 is another prospective sale for Leica. Other devices such as gaming consoles could have features installed to literally render the unit as a brick, unusable. But Microsoft and Sony don't do it as one stolen console is a new sale for them. G19 Posted August 6 Share #19 Posted August 6 As a new owner of the M11, I've been exploring ways to attach an AirTag to the camera for added peace of mind. Currently, I keep an AirTag in my camera bag, which helps, especially when I leave the camera locked in the car trunk. It’s reassuring to know it’s nearby. I recently purchased a SmallRig AirTag cage from Amazon for just over £17. It attaches via the tripod thread on the bottom of the camera. The downside is that it occupies the tripod mount, so you can't use that spot for anything else. While someone could technically remove it, it wouldn’t be quick or easy, and for the small investment, it adds a layer of security if you’re concerned about leaving the camera unattended. The cage itself is a nicely made, all-metal design. Once I have a half case, I plan to attach it to that instead. I’m hesitant to mount it directly on the camera, as the metal base could benefit from a soft lining to better protect the bodywork. Welcome, dear visitor! Derbyshire Man Posted August 6 Share #20 Posted August 6 There’s obviously the Oberwerth tag case, which has a pocket for an air tag below. Oddly mine was a bit too tight so it needed minor surgery. The biggest issue though was I’m not a case man and the bulk subverted the point in having an M at all. Not sure I could cope with air limpet on the bottom of my camera either although it’s a damn sight cheaper!
