I’ve called a few Leica stores here in the US and most of them have reported that they’ve only received a display model since release. I find this a little hard to believe since we’re nearly 4 months out from the launch. Has anyone heard of availability getting any better on this anytime soon?

End of May there were only two copies available in Switzerland. I went for one of them - the display model in the Leica Store Zurich.

Today I tried a 35 Summilux Steel Rim Reissue, thinking that it can compliment this 50 Summilux Reissue. Alas, the 35 was too glowly and soft at 1.4 for my taste. I always thought the reissues were using the same formula but boy was I so wrong. In fact the 50 Lux reissue is so much sharper and contrasty right out of the camera (sooc jpegs as well) that I did not purchase the 35 Lux reissue. A pity cos the 35 reissue is so light and compact…

The pairings I’ve settled on are :

11714 v4 50mm Summilux and 35mm Summilux ASPH pre-FLE.  Similarly sharp and contrasty look in the central zone, though the 35 ASPH holds up better in the corners.

11868 v3 50mm Summilux and 35mm 1.4 Nokton-II ( struggling to justify the steel rim). Outline bokeh on both; Gentle contrast without much glow, large structure detail holding into the edges.

Voigtländer 50mm Heliar 1.5 and 35mm 1.4 MS Apoqualia . Both glow monsters, though first has outline background bokeh and latter smooth background.

.. why wait for the new build, if you have a V2 from 1975 :) (M262, SL50mm, Nik s/w-Konversation)

I’m also struggling to justify the steel rim reissue. To avoid bashing that lens, its merits are the compact size and weight. However for image quality wise, the FLE or pre-FLE would be the better option imo.

I own the Steel Rim Reissue and pair it with the 50 f/1.2 Noctilux Reissue. They're both the same, in that I rarely use them wide open. The SR for me starts at f/1.7, the Noctilux starts at f/1.4. I will very occasionally go to f/1.4 or f/1.2 when I want a very particular ultra-glowy special effect. Usually late at night, when I want to create something truly painterly.

The lenses work for me as everyday lenses because their renderings at the slightly smaller apertures are so beautiful. In both cases, at f/2, the ultra-glow goes away and what's left is an organic swirly vibe that I love.

That said: this new version of the old 50 Lux looks wonderful. If I had the budget, I'd get one. Judging from the samples in this thread, I wouldn't pair it with the Steel Rim, but with an original pre-ASPH 35 Lux.

My preference with a modern 60mp sensor is the 35mm v2 pre ASPH and the 50mm v3 pre-ASPH. They are both the smallest and lightest lenses in their respective arenas which is a big tick for me, coupled with the black M11-P it’s a super light setup that I enjoy very much. I prefer the 35mm at f2 but even wide open, it can give you a good result in some scenarios, it’s just very hit and miss, especially in high contrast scenes, when it hits though, it can be really unique. The 50mm v3 wide open is great on the modern sensor. The new 50mm tempts me though as I really like the design😀 I’m not sure about the weight and longer focus throw though so I would have to test one out when the opportunity arises. If Leica made the Steel Rim re-issue 70cm minimum focus I would have picked one up but they slipped up there imo, unless they plan on releasing a 35mm Summicron Classic and they wanted a degree of separation. Time will tell.

Like you, I love the design of the mount. It is weighty, but it is brass with large elements. In practical terms the focus throw is not a concern for me. How often do 'we' need to go from infinity stop to minimum distance in use? The throw around the focus spot is short enough.

I had the pleasure to use this lens on a recent trip. I hope these shots might help anyone considering a purchase. All shot on an M11, no edits.

Inspired by this discussion, I went to the Leica store in Vienna, Austria, and tried the new "retro" Summilux. It's absolutely amazing — incredible! I'm totally in love with this lens 🙂

I also tried the new Summilux 50 ASPH to compare the so-called sharpness. Yes, the ASPH is definitely sharper, but I wouldn't say the retro lens isn't sharp — it just has its own idea of sharpness, and whether we like it or not is a matter of personal taste.

I found the colors to be really beautiful — warm and unique. So many people try to achieve such colors in post, but here you have a lens that delivers them naturally. I'm truly impressed 🙂

For me, having a technically perfect lens isn't interesting. I'd much rather have one with unique character.
