Never happened to me with focus magnification + focus peaking.

I take it that you don't use focus magnification.

Yes, I avoid the focus magnifier, as it slows me down when tracking objects with continuous shooting. Here I am only accurate and fast enough with open aperture metering (as has always been the case with the SLR). On the EVF, it just doesn't work with M lenses by default.

I only use the magnifying glass for macros and static subjects.

An M lens at f/5.6 can be focused more accurately with the rangefinder than with an EVF.

Why is this great advantage of the RF always ignored here? Let everyone try it with an SL3 - an M lens on the EVF is no fun in the long-term, because the constant stopping down and up and then with focus magnifier is just annoying and is no longer M.

This topic has been discussed extensively at least since Leica switched from the CCD to the CMOS based sensor with the M(240) in many threads.  You don’t need to mount an M lens on an SL to see the benefits and disadvantages of an M with an EVF - just use a Visoflex.

To save you the time of actually reading the considered views of those who have, the EVF provides accurate framing, deals with focus shift, makes focusing long and fast lenses more accurate, allows for close ups (either using the M macro adapter or Leica’s latest lenses with closer focusing), provides actual exposure information when using filters, allows for the use of R lenses (zooms and longer focal lengths) and magnification outside the central patch for critical images.  The EVF is very useful.

Conversely, my experience has been that focus peaking really doesn’t work, and accurately focsuing wides and at smaller apertures has challenges.  Having used M lenses on my TL2, SL and my M10-D with the EVF, I can say with experience that, for me, there are benefits using the rangefinder (faster, but with the flaw that the subject tends to always be in the middle because of the focus patch) and the EVF (more accurate for specific purposes), so I carry the EVF in my bag.  I never focus wide open then stop down when using the EVF as I like exposure simulation.

I have come to the conclusion that sticking with the M10-D, and carrying the EVF, suits my purposes best.  But that’s just me.  An EVF based M is still an interesting proposition.  The MEVF, if it happens, will have its attractions, no doubt.

The discussion seems to be polarised around either rangefinder or EVF, but might there be a combined solution where the RF has an EVF overlay, much in the same way as DSLRs showed in-focus areas? Could the RF patch be augmented by a focus-peaking type overlay for example?

With a unique common point: M lenses.

I agree it should exist as I am pro choice always, as long as it is not at the expense of the rangefinder moving forward.

She is quite recognisable!

I'm sorry, but I'd have to see quite a few more action shots to be convinced that magnify-focus-compose-shoot is a good way of focusing this type of subject.

I find it impossible. As soon as you magnify you lose sight of your scene and you are shooting the shot blind. Spray and pray if it’s an action shot. There are much better cameras for action.

I find that using the rangefinder stopped down and focusing loosely on the subject gets me more keepers. The depth of field at f8 takes care of slightly missed focus.

Sure - shots like these are completely impossible using an RF.
