Now the lever in front allows you to estimate how the framing of the scene will look with frames of standard pairs. And if the frame were electronic, then it would be possible to set up favorite focal lengths in the menu (based on the user's optics) and cycle through them before a possible change of lens.

Have you seen the size of the 35mm f1.4 TL on a CL?. It’s pretty big and that’s a crop sensor. I just can’t see a viable model here for Leica. There is not a single current L mount lens made by them that would work well on an interchangeable Q but we do have many M lenses that would pair very nicely with an EVF M. It’s the path of least resistance for Leica and low risk should it not work out. I think it will though if it’s executed well and priced ok.

The best two things about the Q line are its incredible lens, matched perfectly with the sensor and colour science. And it's immediacy - very portable and pretty good auto-focus.

If you wanted a Q with interchangeable M lenses, that exists elsewhere with numerous 3rd party manufacturers and M adapters. Like the Sigma FP, FPL for example. Any number of Sony, Fuji, Nikon and Canon bodies.

Since some years there are missing some new developments in the M-series. The superb 24mm and the 18mm are no longer available. The same for smaller 75mm and 90 mm, same for the 135mm. Yes, there were the two APOs but the rest are "old" developmentes. These are not bad but the SL35mm has here in the forum a hype but many are not satisfied full open with a modern M-Camera. So I think there will be someting in the pipeline but what is the direction?

No dissonance. Leica wants to sell the same product twice (a normal desire for a manufacturer is to make money without investing in development), and users want innovation.

Yes but why do they bring out M11 type cameras at the same time as pre-aspherical Summiluxes?  It gives a sense of loss of direction or maybe two schools of thinking competing.

They just make money on whatever they can. I'm not sure there's a strategy.

That’s it. The lens and camera are built to work together. I’m pretty sure that there are lens elements built further into the body to help keep size down. It’s not a conventional lens design.

I think they are trying to please everyone. If they went all out with the M digital cameras immediately without trying to maintain the heritage, they would have less of a headache in that regard but who knows how successful that would have been. This is yet again, why I think they should push two lines. Base plate, rangefinder etc and modern EVF super duper.

No it is not. Lens, aperture, shutter and sensor are designed and built as a single unit. Plus software as part of the optical lens design.

They have addressed the 'modern EVF super duper' with two lines, the SL and Q lines.

I couldn't disagree more.

I have a 1980 (pre-ash) 35mm Summicron on my M10 and you have to seriously pixel peep to see anything lacking when comparing to my modern Hasselblad X1D2 with 45p lens.

I have Sigma lenses, plus Voigtlander M mount. They both produce wonderful sharp images with nice colours.

There are literally dozens of amazing lenses available for the M mount. Leica, Voigtlander, Zeiss, Konica, Minolta plus new Chinese made additions.

People seem to have bought into this mad tech industry churn inducing idea that if something is over a year old it's no good any more.

Totally agree .I think that just may be a possibility. 

Some older M users are finding that they can no longer use an M and I wonder how many long term new users the model attracts.

I can imagine that M usage may have peaked .

The advertising these days seems to increasingly centred around celeb users and pros who I personally doubt use them as much as they claim to.

Maybe a plan B is required although what  ... who knows.

A Q with an M mount or even an L mount would be a good start ?

Two complete guesses.

In the music digital world, people are going back to vinyl. It's less convenient but people prefer the tactile product over the convenience of digital.

I imagine Leica are selling more Leica M's now than 20 years ago. In the 90's you rarely saw a Leica M. It was an expensive, niche camera.

I know a pro photojournalist who has an SL3 and an M11. He uses the M 90% of the time.
