A local dealer has a new SL2-S and a secondhand SL2-S being sold with 35 SL Summicron ASPH, both selling for the same price. I’m thinking about visiting tomorrow. I just can’t decide which might be the better option for me. I only have M lenses … I’d appreciate any insights.

My tuppence worth…If the used camera looks like it’s been treated well in its previous life, take the “free” lens for sure.

M lenses are wonderful on the SL but having at least one native lens will allow you to enjoy the camera as it was designed to be used too.

I would agree on getting the used with the 35 Summicron, provided they are in great shape. I don't plan to have many native lenses with my SL2-S but one zoom and a couple of primes would be nice. I have the Sigma DG DN lenses  for my Sony and I really like those, so I will either try to find someone to trade with on FM or sell them outright. Good luck!

Just returned from visiting the dealer … empty handed.

I inspected the SL2-S and 35, but not being familiar with the SL system, found the operation a little challenging. No doubt I need to spend more time reviewing the manual to get sufficiently comfortable to make an informed decision. What is very obvious is how much heavier it is than an M combination. Of course it is not an M substitute, but a supplement to allow me to use longer (and wide) focal lengths, and for low light, something my M262 is less well suited to.

I was somewhat put off by the hair and obvious smearing all over the sensor, which suggested it had been wet cleaned somewhat carelessly. I might reconsider the new one they are advertising, if only for the lack of sensor abuse …

Surely a used unit/sensor could easily be cleaned by the dealer.. I really would not let that put me off.. I once bought a Ford Capri, the car was perfect except for a more than dirty cream steering wheel, the dealer replaced it with a new one and the car never missed a beat in 3years..

With an unfamiliar camera, unsure about the risks in buying that particular model, I would also be put off by a dirty sensor, as a sign of possible worse care elsewhere.

That was my reaction, reasonably or otherwise. Given that any serious issues can really only be addressed by Leica Wetzlar out of warranty, I’m less inclined to take a chance with such a significant investment, even at the very good price at which it was offered.

I've been waiting on the adapter since Dec. 10. It's moved to backorder status, which means they have no idea when it's coming now. The silver version shows temporarily out of stock and not backorder, meaning it will be coming back in a reasonable amount of time. I'm thinking about calling B&H and seeing if they can convert the adapter cost to a store credit.

I asked about this when mine was in backorder status and they kindly offered to cancel the entire order instead. haha.

Hah. I'm waiting for the silver version to come back into stock in case they'd allow that in place of the black one.

It’s a great camera. I use mine with M lenses and for scanning film. The weight with an M lens on there is not so bad as an everyday carry as long as you are not hanging it solely around your neck. With the bigger SL lenses it’s a different story, I tried the 24-90 and hated the size and weight of the total package but I’m no pro and shoot just for fun.

It punches above its weight (24mp) when it comes to output and it has really good dynamic range. The lowlight performance is also the best I’ve ever used from a colour sensor. Comfortable at 12500iso and usable at 25000iso. The evf is great and the shutter sounds perfect, really nice to use👌

I'm selling a silver one now that I have the black one from this order if you're interested ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Since I've already paid for it in the price of the kit, I'll just wait for it to eventually ship. I just thought I might get it sooner if I asked them to ship me the silver instead.

I pulled trigger but not from B&H given that their m-l adapter is in an infinite out of stock status.

For $2400 all in (with tax), a camera and an extra BP-SCL6, I think it’s a better dealer than B&H for $3000 + tax with the extra adapter which God-knows-when will be available.

I’m going to find a cheap LLL adapter for $100 to try my m lenses first before diving into the SL lenses rabbit hole.

now I have a separate question. For years of my indoor studio work, I have been using Nikon D system and recently Z. I have bunch of nice Nikon flashlights. Is there any easy way to integrate Nikon SB flashlights to the SL2-S?

I've used my older Nikon flashes sucessfully with my Leicas.  They work fine in manual and Auto (auto-thyrister) modes.

good to know!

I actually tried SB600 on my M11 and it works.

I also have a SB900 and a SB800. I am wondering if I can use all of them to form kind of studio strobe lighting system like I always do with my Nikon D850 and Zf.

How a master flash on hotshoe can trigger other off the camera slave-mode flash?

Long-time M user here, a CL in my cupboard, SL 601, Panasonic S5ii, etc. full set of M lenses, R lenses. Within a few days the SL2S has rabiply become my carry-everywher e camera.

I wish I never swapped the CL, I really enjoyed that camera. I find the SL2S a wonderful camera, use it with my M and R lenses. Terrific!

I quite agree. The cameras that I own are all cameras that really fit my needs and that I really like (including the CL and S5ii) - but two stand out: The M9M and SL2S. Both are cold dead hands cameras.

I have owned quite a few Cameras in my time, the SL2/S is my favourite that's why I own two of them, Reportage (green) and the standard black.

I mainly use the Standard black with my R and M lenses as well as a couple of Zeiss Milvas lenses (Nikon mount) all work beautifully, and the Reportage with SL lenses.

Close second is my  Fuji XT-2 which I'am also very fond off, my Nikon and Canon cameras are gone hopefully never to be seen with these brands in my hands again.

Couldn't be happier.

Thank you Leica and Fuji.

Cheers.

PS.... If you're thinking of getting the SL2/S go for it, frankly I prefer it to the SL3.

The SL2-S is, hands down, the best camera I’ve ever owned. I have been a Nikon SLR/DSLR user since the 1970’s (still use my Dad’s old FM and my FM3A); had the M9-P, M262 and I still have my original Q. In the main, all have been great. The Q is brilliant and I’d never rule out having a final fling with another M.
But! when I use my M lenses on the SL2-S, or the Sigma Contemporary primes, I absolutely love the experience and the output; superb manual focus (both M lenses & the Sigmas), accurate autofocus; simple, manual, exposure settings using the lens barrel and camera dials. Outstanding EVF. 24 Megapixels. Beautiful to hold and to look at. The SL2-S will become a Leica classic. While the resolution wars continue and Leica goes through the SL2/3/4/5 gears, the SL2-S gives many of us enough - more even - than we need. It will continue to be my main stills camera for years to come. On the odd occasion I need my 24-70 / 100-400 zooms, it delivers. The L Mount Alliance is a great thing and, for me, the SL2-S is the sweet spot that’s right at the centre of that universe. At current prices I might even get another 😂
Happy New Year to all.
