At first I thought these guys knew each other and were playing around, but not so. This sequence of events unfolded out of the blue in seconds, and the Q3 43 was up to the task. I think if I had been using a M camera I would not have been able to nail focus (ok, the camera focused on the young man's shoulder on that last frame, but that was split second stuff). This frame is f/2.0, so I would have swung the camera onto the nose of one of the men to patch focus, then re-composed, but by then the moment would have been gone. Quite a bit of excitement for my first day out with the Q3 43. Welcome, dear visitor! What type of gun blue did you use? Also, did you have to do any sanding prior to applying it? I love the brass accessories, but they are way too “flashy” and almost more of a yellow color. These are perfect. I’ve also wondered if Leica applies some kind of clear coat to them after their “blasted” finish.

I’ve also wondered if Leica applies some kind of clear coat to them after their “blasted” finish. I did this last year when the Q3 28 came out and these accessories dropped at the same time. I used Birchwood Casey Super Blue and a tincture of liver of sulfur as a mixture. First, soak the brass in hot water/vinegar multiple times. Then apply many light coats of the mixture and let sit a few days between each application. I did use micro sandpaper to gently scuff the brass before each application (very light and very gentle). But the real secret is time and sunlight and letting it sit beetween each application. And actually using them on the Q3 in real life shooting. I also kept each brass piece in my car and rubbed them with my hands while driving. The body’s sweat and salt helps even out the patina over time. It is a common patina technique for stubborn brass. It works if you are not in a hurry. But if you rush, it turns out spotty and cheap looking. Edited September 29, 2024 by Npod

Funny, just spent the morning experimenting with brass finishes but ended up going the other way, a more muted look. I like your results as well. Feel like we should move these posts to a new thread so as not to distract from the awesome photos on display here? edit to add, Leica didn't have soft shutter buttons in stock yesterday, otherwise would have done that as well.
