Sigma 28-105 f/2.8 coming in September

Apparently Sigma will announce a new 28-105 f/2.8. The lens is supposed to be smaller and lighter than the recent Canon version. Rumors say it will be under 1kg. 

Could be a nice one lens solution when travelling etc. 

Compared to a 24-70, personally I’d take the extra 105mm reach over the lens starting at 24mm any day.

Well, if you put it that way, the 28-105 can be paired with the 100-400.

This lens intrigues me even more than the Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8 because Sigma tends to have excellent image and build quality. Looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.

I recently shot an event where this lens would have been perfect. All I would have needed was this lens on the Panasonic S5 and my M9. It was a dinner event with speeches, spotlights on the speaker and darker/normal lighting for the dining area. As I didn't know how dark the venue would be, my kit was the S5 with 50/1.8, M9 with Distagon 35/1.4, and G9 with Olympus 17/1.2 and 45/1.2. This new Sigma could have taken the place of those focal lengths if needed. Now I'm even more curious about pricing and image quality.

Well,I see your point, but given the quality delta I would prefer the two-lens solution Or maybe I’m just a plain old-fashioned traditionalist.

I'm still hoping they'll release a DG DN version of the 105 1.4.

Lens tests seem to indicate some IQ compromise at the tele end. So I think I'll hold off until DxO corrections are available. Pre-orders are open in the US (B&H) and Germany (Koch) for around 1500 USD / 1700 EUR.

I have the 24-70 for my SL2-S and am starting to feel that I could use a little more reach for my kid's soccer games, dance recitals, etc. This lens is tempting, because I'm not really interested in acquiring a second longer zoom like a 70-200; I want a one-lens solution for event and sports photography, and I'm never too far from the action. But I could also upgrade to the Leica 24-90 for around the same total cost. How much further is 105 compared to 90? Would getting to 90 be long enough? What about losing the 4mm on the wide end? And won't the Leica offer better image quality? But isn't the Leica heavier and bulkier?

FWIW  Petapixel video said, (at around min 7:30 of the vid) "tons of detail at 2.8 and little improvement at 5.6".  Softness they noticed was at 28mm wide open.  

I have not watched or read other review yet...

This lens excites me greatly. My workhorse is the Panasonic 24-105 f4, upgraded from the Sigma 24-105 with adapter. The new Sigma, although not as wide, weighs less than the old Sigma plus adapter and has the benefit of native mount and presumably way faster autofocus, hopefully even better than the Panasonic.
