Well done Leica!

I’ve had this for a few days now and I’ve done the most terrible things with dying batteries and inexcusable power off, and I have completely failed to break it (which I managed easily before).

hopefully this is end of story!

Excellent Jono well done.

I installed the new firmware and got the screen prompt to restart the camera. Following the Release Notes, I turned the camera off and then it would not restart. Has anyone else had this issue of the camera not restarting after updating?

Does it still not turn on?

I have my SL3 updated to the latest firmware. After updating the firmware, I need to turn off the SL3. The SL3 will not restart automatically; instead, I have to press the button to turn on the camera.

Leica has released an update(v 1.1.9) for the Leica SL3 that should solve the problem described here.

You can install the update via the Leica FOTOS app or download it here from the  Leica SL3 download page.

The changes in the new Leica SL3 firmware version in detail

Error correction

  • Sporadic error that resulted in unnoticed overwriting of existing recordings if the camera was not properly turned off beforehand (e.g., during battery replacement in standby mode or after an unexpected software interruption).
  • Correction of errors in the firmware.

Improvement

  • Optimization of the Leica FOTOS connection.

The update is NOT available via Fotos app so far!!

The recent firmware update is somehow been disappointing. While it claims to have fixed an error that I never encountered, therefore I am unable to verify this. Moreover, the other errors still seem to be present at first glance. Additionally, there is still no appreciated information provided e.g. on speeds of the CFe slot. It makes me wonder if Leica is truly committed to developing a professional-grade camera.

This is unfair to Leica. They were focusing at fixing this one critical defect that resulted in loss of data due to a bug in the firmware. If you look at the file release, it’s 1.1.9, the increment on the last dotted number means it’s a minor release, with possibly version 1.2 around the corner with more juicy updates.
Fixing additional issues requires extra time to develop a fix and test it, resulting in a delay of the critical patch, and even more infuriated users.
I’m sure they’ll also fix the remaining outstanding issues in one of the next updates, but like all companies, they have a priority list for their bug fix strategy, and a roadmap of updates planned for the next year or two, at least.

On the juicy side, I want to see Multishot Mode brought to the SL3. I use it all the time on my SL2S and SL2 users loved it too.

At the SL3 introduction, Leica developers were surprised to have so many at the intro event asking why no multishot which hinted that it might have been an oversight.

Like with most cameras with multishot, I use SL2's multishot once or twice when getting the camera and never again. Leica's and Panasonic's implementation is one of the most convenient ones (in-camera assembly, motion artifact removal). However, I still do not see much application: it requires a tripod, and any motion degrades the image quality.

I wish people would share their multishot images more often.

But, yeah, it would be nice to get multishot on SL3 as well.

But.. but... but...  A higher number is ALWAYS better. How can you take a decent photograph with a mere 60 MP? You will be the laughing stock of the photographic world! Not to mention those deplorable images at a laughable 24 MP, I dare not call them photographs.

I'm open to persuasion......

I have never printed above A2 size myself, and have paid only for canvases at larger sizes, so higher resolution for better printing is irrelevant for me.

But I can see the argument for higher resolution for better cropping. In this particular case, does a cropped multishot image have better IQ than a cropped hi-res sensor image?

I want EFCS before multi shot. I’d use multi shot occasionally but EFCS everyday. And I want the rear click wheel to be customisable.

Personally I find multi shots actual usage limited. At least Leica had a single DNG captured with the MS image which was the best implementation I’ve seen. I do use it on the OM-1 but not so much on the SL2.

Because multishot increases the real resolution only by a little, mainly by removing any false colors (moire). Moire is is more of a problem with 24MP than with 60MP sensors, especially when no AA Filter is used.

The S5II has hand held multi shot. No tripod required.

Yes, but the benefits of handheld multishots are typically even smaller than the tripod multishots.
