I hope animal eye recognition will work  as advertised. That would be exceedingly useful for me.

On my EXTREMELY limited testing of AFC and animal detect on the SL3 the camera does seem to bias towards the eyes even though there's no indication of this. Mind you I'm only working with a pair of aging dogs at home for this, so far. I have zero idea if it can keep up with faster moving subjects yet and focus on the eyes. But I have an A1 for that. The SL3 isn't ever going to be a sports camera (like the A7R5 isn't) with those readout speeds and frame rates (with AF).

I suspect your S5II might become the better camera if action photography is required while the SL3 (and potentially S1RII) are the image quality monsters.

For lack of Cheetahs I will certainly test it out on my dogs, but it is pretty good in that respect already. Animal eye detection will be the icing on the cake.
I think we are seeing half the model lineup now:
S5ii and SL3S (to be - Leica would be well advised to shrink it down to S5 size) will be cousin cameras as will be the SL3 and S1R (still to be introduced). Image quality differences will be marginal as Leica and Panasonic are cooperating closely in sensor development. That need not be a handicap for Leica - in the past they used the same film as all other brands.

Yep. Agreed. Although I will mention the thinner sensor stack on the Leica variants does make a difference with M lenses and a *tiny* difference with the APO Summicrons (the bleeding edge of lens IQ). I have the S1R and SL2 and they're the same but different. The S5II is lovely in the hand though.

Leica USA, in their release video, had a triangle with the three main focus points of the SL3. IQ, UI and build quality. Ultimate performance for running cheetah, was not on that chart. :) So when I bought my 2 x SL3 bodies I did so with that knowledge. Information that was easy to find with access to the web. I have little time for those going on about the SL3 as an action camera or the whining about sensor readout speeds. Those people should have done some more research. And no, just because it's expensive doesn't mean it should do everything better. A Ferrari is not the right vehicle to haul lumber....

Mind you, as you are well aware, about 98% of African animal encounters would be captured just fine with an SL3. The cheetah running to sleeping ratio is quite small.

For the cost of a SL3 body you can grab an A1 with 200-600 and 70-200/4, if you really want an action rig. Or a Z8 and 180-600. Maybe the SL3S will compete with the R3 (I doubt it). It's not like if you have a Leica, you sign a contract that you can't have anything else.

Mind you I'd consider a kidney sale if the SL3-S had the A1 sensor in it.... And I'd also probably take my SL3 on my next Africa trip as my main rig, with an A1 on the side....

yes, I think it‘s like face detection with 601 or SL2 with early FWs; works (good), but we haven‘t  ontology which eye is focused

Yes, but my instinct would be to.choose between a hypothetical SL3S and S5Ii for this use as my lenses are in the Leica/Panasonic/Sigma universe.  There is very little reason to consider an SL3/S1Rii for this kind of use.
The only reason to go for an SL2S or SL3S would be the use of M wideangles but I have my backup SL601 for that.

I couldn't get the SL3 to focus on my toy poodle running towards me.   All were OOF 😭

But one consolation is that it detects birds, cats and dinosaurs as animals

Bummer! It would have been an awesome poodle picture. Fortunately, nothing that can‘t be redone in S mode with Auto ISO.

You do not need S mode for Auto ISO; you can set the minimum shutter speed in A mode.
