erudolph Posted March 7, 2024 Share #21 Posted March 7, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Oh, one other question: has Leica revised the file numbering so that, after FW update or reset, it is possible to pick up the numbering where it had been previously? Chaemono Posted March 7, 2024 Share #22 Posted March 7, 2024 They tried to get closer to the colors of the original SL is my impression.
Jeff S Posted March 7, 2024 Share #23 Posted March 7, 2024 Thanks, Jono, as usual. Your usual glass half full approach, but shame that there are so many small things that cumulatively would nag me coming from SL2: louder shutter, “not so wonderful” battery life, no charger, on/off button going from simple to bizarrely complex, learning curve for new menu/settings approach (just makes me appreciate simplicity of my M10-R/M), need for FW updates already to optimize some new features (although most don’t interest me anyway), etc. Jeff
Guest Posted March 7, 2024 Share #24 Posted March 7, 2024 Thanks for the interesting review and photos, Jono 🙂 I'm kind of disappointed to learn that content authenticity hasn't made it. This is one of the interesting new features in times of the AI flood, besides the evolutionary technical changes that all have expected. This is also a hardware and not just firmware issue and we won't see it before an upgrade to SL3.2 or SL4 I guess. Still okay with my SL and SL2. Would love to see a pure SL3-P without any video features, maybe even a SL3-P monochrome. Waiting for the next cycle. Good for the bank account. theseahawk Posted March 7, 2024 Share #25 Posted March 7, 2024 Thanks for the detailed review, and the first to identify the function of the button-like protuberance on the top left of the EVF housing. I don’t think I’ll ever use a timecode sync so I’d probably find this to be a visual distraction to the camera’s look. Also would prefer a fully articulated screen instead of the limited-range one here. love the puppy photos - never too many!

It is likely 1/10 sec for stills, as in M11, when shooting in 14-bit mode. DPR writes that the camera has a 12-bit mode (5fps). Assuming the sensor behaves as the a7rIV's sensor, the readout speed will be 1/20 sec in 12-bit mode and 1/15 in 14-bit APS-C mode. For comparison, SL2 has a 1/26 sec readout speed.

Because with those figures it is a hard pass. 31ms at 24p is ridiculous. 1
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! LocalHero1953 Posted March 7, 2024 Share #31 Posted March 7, 2024 (edited) Another question...... Has Leica changed its philosophy behind custom buttons: can one assign specific menu choices to a button as a toggle e.g. iAF/Field (something I often want to do in a big hurry), or AWB/Kelvin. I find the timecode connector position bizarre aesthetically. A useful function, though most will not touch it, so why place a wart on the camera's nose? Tjazz Posted March 7, 2024 Share #32 Posted March 7, 2024 A fine and useful review. I just pre-ordered mine from Miami, and am considering trading my SL2-S and Q2 Monochrome for it. The pre-order gives me some time to read the reviews, think about my needs/want, and consider whether I want to part with those cameras in favor of the SL3 (I will keep my Q3). 1

Isn't 31ms the fastest readout measured for 4K 24p?
RexGig0 Posted March 7, 2024 Share #34 Posted March 7, 2024 Thanks for this review. Well-done! I may not buy into the SL system, but, I am glad that the SL3 now exists. 1

So: useful - if you use video - and I realise most will not.

sebben Posted March 7, 2024 Share #39 Posted March 7, 2024 (edited) Judging by the Petapixel video the rolling shutter is as bad as expected. Why they put a timecode port on a camera that won't be used heavily as a video camera is interesting to say the least. Leica SL3 is L-Mount’s BEST High-Res Option… For Now" width="200"> I wonder if this leaves the door open for an SL3-S after all.
