I have no recent NY experience. However, I think NY can be compared with HK in a certain sens. In this case, I use a 35LUX (mostly) and the 21SEM

That would be my favourite: These 2 lenses.

With the M10 I would have taken 21, 28 and 50. With the crop-options of M11 I changes my habits to 21 and 35. I own as well a 35 Lux and the 21 SEM

Further I use a small pouch with a belt around the hips. This should contain 1 small lens plus 1 spare battery.

Since the acquisition of my iPhone 15 Pro Max, I now only travel with the 35mm lens.

With the forthcoming announcement of the iPhone 16 at the end of this year you will most probably sell all your Leica gear.

I‘d take the M11&MP + 28/35 & 50 with me. Probably 28 or 35 is enough if you don‘t shoot digital and analog in parallel…

I found it way more calming if you dont have to many crazy lenses with you. Just one camera and lens. Typically I decide everytime I leave the door which camera & lens I want to bring.

When I visited I took 21, 35 & 90. The 90 was probably least used, but was used. Most was the 35 but I did use the 21 more than I'd anticipated I would. 3 lenses, one body, spare batteries and cards was spot on. Carriable and versatile.

All that said, it is somewhat a personal decision as you may lean more towards 28 and 50 with perhaps a 75 or 90. It really depends on your own peference. But 3 lenses and a body is very manageable. I see no point in owning an interchagable lens camera and staying with just one lens though.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I think I’m gonna take both bodies, 21,28,35 & 50. For sure I won’t lug everything around all the time, will depend on what we’re doing that day, so will probably leave a couple of lenses and a body in the hotel at some point. And I would image the 28 will get the most use, but the others will be handy to have on hand also.

Gonna be heading to New York for spring break with the family, its our first time in New York...

I'm leaning towards taking

- M11 &  M11m

- 25, 28, 35, 50

You are forgetting a couple of pieces of kit that are must haves for visiting the Big Apple

- Taser

- bear spray

The TriElmar MATE has become my constant travel companion. No more lens changing, excellent image quality, F/4 is wide enough for street and travel, especially with modern sensors.

I tried this approach, but saw a significant number of pics being degraded by flare. As a result of this experience, when working as a journalist I never used the MATE. I just didn't trust it.

On holiday in Athens late last year I used a 35mm Summaron most of the time, but switched to a 50mm Summilux when I needed to be more selective in terms of angle, or simply needed the extra light-gathering capability. My 35mm Summilux ASPH has begun a process of 'unscheduled disassembly' so will have to go back to Leica for repair, and I'll also ask then to check my MATE.

As mentioned, it's a highly personal decision that no one what should make for you.

For people shots, or shots that fit loosely into the realm of environmental portraiture, that is, "persons in context", either the 35 of the 28 would be a very useful lens.

For the urban landscape side of things, something like the 70 or 90 sure comes in handy. They address the tendency to try and include too much in a frame, they require you to be selective, and yet are not so tight that you're only able to isolate on single tiny individual elements in the landscape. So, for buildings down the street, or treatment of an architectural gesture or feature, I find a medium-to-long"ish" lens an essential part of the kit. It's not something I'd use for most of the shots, but for those for which it's right, I'd hate to be without it. The Macro 90 Elmar is a simply great lens for a travel kit.

One lens? For me? Either the 35 or the 50.

Two lenses? The 35 and the 90.

Three lenses? The 28 or 35, the 50, and the 90.

But that's just me. I think most folks will easily find what fits best for them.

One general tip might be to have something like the 3 lenses I mentioned, but not bring more than one or two on an individual walk. Switching lenses takes time. Carrying a bunch of lenses is a schlep. Walking with a zoom like the SL 24-90 is kind of a schlep too, but I've done it.

Try stuff! Try focal lengths you aren't certain will work! If they do, you're photographic world gets broader! If they don't, take something else on the next walk.

Most of all, above all else, Enjoy!

Have done NY only on a Q2 and was not at all disappointed - it was more of a holiday trip.

Later I went for a workshop and did it with 21, 35 and 75.  I feel this is much better for pure photos, sometimes for arch the 21 was great (consider occulus or something - where the 28/35 might be a night too tight).  35 mm was most used by far.  and 75 you get some great shots say from Staten Island ferry or on overpasses of long streets etc...

But as others say, most important is have fun whatever you take you will be happy with.
